Pullman to snare trophy
TACOMA – While it may not be the trophy they aspired for when the tournament began, the Pullman Greyhounds will bring home a trophy nevertheless.
Shelby Cheslek scored 13 points and Kirsi Voshell had 12 points to lead Pullman to a 54-43 consolation semifinal victory over the Tumwater Thunderbirds in the State 2A girls basketball tournament Friday at the Tacoma Dome.
The Greyhounds (23-2) will face the Othello Huskies (24-4) for fourth or seventh place at 1:30 p.m. today.
Othello defeated West Valley 58-38 in the other consolation semifinal.
Pullman jumped out to a 12-4 lead after one period and led 23-17 at halftime. The Greyhounds then doubled up the Thunderbirds – 16-8 – in the third period to ice the game.
Ashley Andrews scored 18 points to lead Tumwater.
Othello 58, West Valley 38: Allison Walker scored 21 points and Courtney Kirkwood scored 18 to lead the Huskies past the Eagles (18-7).
Othello led 25-11 at halftime and pulled further away in the third quarter, outscoring West Valley 20-11. West Valley made its first state appearance since 1997.
•River Ridge (23-3) will face Ellensburg (23-4) for the state title at 9 tonight.
