Senior classes offered at NIC

COEUR d’ALENE – Room is still available at a discounted rate this spring in several North Idaho College credit courses specifically designed for seniors citizens 60 and older.

All courses are offered on NIC’s main campus in Coeur d’Alene and cost $30.

•Introduction to the Internet for Seniors is a hands-on class with skill-building on the Internet and e-mail. The class is offered from 3:30 to 5:20 p.m. Mondays and Wednesdays, through May 7.

•Introduction to Word Processing for Seniors uses Microsoft Word software to teach participants hands-on word processing skills. The class is offered from 11 a.m. to 12:50 p.m. Mondays and Wednesdays, through April 23.

•Tennis for Seniors will focus on the health benefits of tennis, especially for seniors who want to learn how to play or improve their skills. The class will be offered from 2:30 to 4:20 p.m. Tuesdays and Thursdays, through May 8.

•Those who have already completed the Introduction to the Computer for Seniors class can enroll in the Introduction to Computer for Seniors Part II class, which will teach participants more about file management, defaults and using programs such as Excel and Word. The class will be offered from 11 a.m. to 12:50 p.m. Tuesdays and Thursdays, through April 24.

•What Color is Your Retirement? assists those preparing for retirement in exploring personal interests and creative pursuits that can be followed after retirement. It is not intended as a financial planning class. It is offered from 6 to 8:50 p.m. Tuesdays, March 18 through April 15.

•Educational Technology Skills for Seniors will include information on software programs designed for those with hearing, vision and mobility limitations. The class is offered from 2 to 2:50 p.m. Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays, March 24 through May 5.

•Mental Fitness and Aging demonstrates how lifestyle behaviors and cognitive training strategies can maintain or even enhance thinking processes as people age. The class is offered from 9 to 11:50 a.m. Fridays, April 11 through May 2.

•Easy and Elegant Desserts for Seniors focuses on easy, yet elegant desserts that can be prepared at home. The class is offered from noon to 2 p.m. Mondays and Fridays March 24 through April 25. A second session of the class will be offered from 2:30 to 4:30 p.m. Tuesdays and Thursdays, April 15 through May 8.

Another special service NIC offers to senior citizens is the NIC Gold Card program, which offers those 60 and older free admission to all NIC-sponsored events in which admission is charged. Events held on campus but sponsored by entities other than NIC, such as Coeur d’Alene Summer Theatre, are not included. In addition, seniors also qualify for a semester-long parking permit at a reduced rate of $5. The permit allows seniors park anywhere that student parking is permitted on campus. Call NIC Campus Safety at 769-3310.
