Twice a month in Handle Extra, photojournalist Tom Davenport offers a new look at a place familiar to Kootenai County residents. We'd like you to guess where the photograph was taken, and write a few words about the place. Tell us why this place is special to you, how it makes you feel, or what is notable about it that helped you to recognize it.

A prize will be awarded to the person who writes the best essay correctly identifying the photo location. Please keep essays to 300 words or less.

Spring runoff from a creek that shares its name cuts pathways through this ice covered lake.

Marie Howell of Post Falls wrote the winning essay that best described the last photo, which was a picture of the Spokane River’s north channel dam.

Essay: I am writing in regard to the Kootenai canvas photo.

It is part of the Post Falls dam. My daughter and grandchildren were here on a visit in January and we went down to Falls Park and walked all over. In fact I took the same exact photo. Everything was covered with snow and ice, the river was nearly frozen over completely. It was beautiful.

We love to go to watch the dam. It is such a huge part of history in Post Falls.We have lived in the Post Falls area for 32 years. It is a wonderful area with a lot of recreation.
