Holy Week

Area churches are gearing up for Easter on March 23. Here are some services being held during Holy Week:

“The Seattle Pacific University Choir will perform at the 9 a.m. Palm Sunday service at Shadle Park Presbyterian Church, 5508 N. Alberta St.

The choir will sing for most of the service, which will also include a short message. For more information, call the church office at (509) 327-5522.

First Presbyterian Church, 318 S. Cedar St., will hold three Palm Sunday services on Sunday, at 8:30 and 11 a.m. and at 6:05 p.m. For more information, call (509) 747-1058.

St. Stephen’s Episcopal Church, 5720 S. Perry St., will offer Palm Sunday services with Holy Eucharist, Saturday at 5 p.m. and Sunday at 8 and 10:15 a.m. For more information, call the church office at (509) 448-2255.

St. Paul’s Methodist Church, 1620 N. Monroe St., will hold a Palm Sunday/Passion Sunday service Sunday at 10:30 a.m. For more information, call the church office at (509) 327-9539.

Fowler United Methodist Church, 3928 N. Howard St., will celebrate Palm Sunday at 10:30 a.m. For more information, call the church office at (509) 325-3242.

Heritage Congregational Church, 1801 E. 29th Ave., will hold its Palm Sunday worship service at 10 a.m. Sunday. For more information, call the church office at (509) 624-5090.

The Cathedral of St. John the Evangelist, 127 E. 12th Ave., will offer a Holy Eucharist service on Sunday at 8 a.m.; a Holy Eucharist, Liturgy of the Palms service at 9 a.m.; “Window into Holy Week” in the Great Hall at 10 a.m.; and Holy Eucharist with Liturgy of the Palms beginning in the Great Hall at 11 a.m.

Spokane Valley United Methodist Church will have a combined Palm Sunday service at 10 a.m. Sunday. That will be folllowed by a Hallelujah Party for children in preschool through fifth grade from 3:30 to 5 p.m. Kids will listen to the Easter story, participate in fun activities and have an Easter egg hunt.

The church, at 115 N. Raymond Road, also will host a Maundy Thursday service at 7 p.m. and a Good Friday service at 7 p.m.

“The Knights of Columbus at St. Paschal’s Catholic Church will host a Palm Sunday breakfast from 8:30 to 11:30 a.m. The menu includes pancakes, scrambled eggs and ham. The meal is by donation. It will be served in the basement of the church school at 2521 N. Park Road.

Millwood Presbyterian Church, 3223 N. Marguerite Road, will host a Palm Sunday pancake breakfast from 9:30 to 11:30 a.m. The cost is $5 per person. Children under 6 are admitted free. Proceeds from the breakfast will go to the senior high mission trip to Mexico.

The church also will host a Good Friday service at 7 p.m.

Metaline Falls United Congregational Church of Christ, 101 W. Fifth Ave. in Metaline Falls, Wash., will hold a Palm Sunday service at 10 a.m., followed by a fellowship potluck; a Maundy Thursday service on Thursday at 7 p.m.; and a Good Friday service on Friday at 7 p.m. For more information, call (509) 446-3301.

Mission Community Presbyterian Church, 2103 E. Mission Ave., will open its sanctuary during Holy Week on Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday from noon until 12:45 p.m. For more information, call the church office at (509) 534-4502.

Pax Christi Spokane will hold a time for collective repentance and observation of the fifth anniversary of the war in Iraq, Wednesday at 6 p.m. at St. Joseph Parish, 1503 W. Dean Ave.

“Lead Us From War to Peace: a Service of Repentance” and “A Litany of Repentance from the Fruits of War” will begin at 6 p.m. For more information, call (509) 358-4273.

Zion Lutheran Church, 8304 E. Buckeye Ave., will have a service with communion at 7 p.m. Thursday. Holy Friday will be celebrated with a meditation of the cross at 12:10 p.m. and a service the cross at 7 p.m.

“The 7 p.m. worship service Thursday at the Veradale United Church of Christ, 611 N. Progress Road, will include a communion meal and candlelight.

Spokane Valley Church of the Nazarene, 15515 E. 20th Ave., will have a communion service at 7 p.m. Thursday and a Tenebrae service at 7 p.m. on Good Friday.

“A Good Friday service will begin at 7:30 p.m. at Foothills Community Church, 11102 N. Forker Road.

“The Episcopal Church of the Resurrection, 15319 E. Eighth Ave., will host a Maundy Thursday Eucharist with an optional foot washing ceremony at 7 p.m. There will be a service of healing at 7 p.m. on Good Friday.

St. Mary’s Catholic Church, 304 S. Adams Road, will host the Stations of the Cross at noon on Good Friday.

“A Maundy Thursday service will begin at 7 p.m. Thursday at Opportunity Christian Church, 708 N. Pines Road. The service will be preceded by a meal at 6 p.m.

Good Shepherd Lutheran Church, 821 S. Sullivan Road, will have a Maundy Thursday service at 7 p.m. and a Good Friday service at 7 p.m.

“The Spokane Valley Seventh-day Adventist Church will present “Journey to the Cross,” a dramatic portrayal of the last week of Christ’s life, on Friday, next Saturday and March 23. Actors will dramatize various scenes that visitors will walk by, led by a guide. The journey will last 25 minutes and people may arrive at any time between 6 and 9 p.m. each evening. There is no admission charge.

“A Good Friday service will begin at 7 p.m. at Christ Lutheran Church, 13009 E. Broadway Ave.

Opportunity Presbyterian Church, 202 N. Pines Road, will host a Maundy Thursday service with communion at 7 p.m. and a Tenebrae service at 7 p.m. on Good Friday.

“A Good Friday worship service will begin at 7:30 p.m. Friday at Peace Lutheran Church, 4124 N. Harvard Road.

Buddhist guest

The Spokane Buddhist Temple, 927 S. Perry St., will host the Rev. Donald Castro on Sunday at 3:30 p.m.

Lenten films

Manito United Methodist Church, 3220 S. Grand Blvd., will present the movie “Mass Appeal,” starting Jack Lemmon, today at 4 p.m. as part of its “Films of Faith – Lenten Movie Series.”

Unity Church events

The Unity Church of Truth, 2900 S. Bernard, will present “You Can Heal Your Life,” a film based on the book of the same name, on Wednesday at 7 p.m.

Discussion series

Manito Presbyterian Church, 401 E. 30th Ave., is presenting a series of discussions, “Terrorism, Torture and the Way of the Cross,” on Sundays this month.

Sunday’s topic is “A Christian Response to the Problem of Torture.” The discussion, presented by the Rev. Todd Cioffi, begins at 9 a.m.

‘Sharing the Dharma’

Sravasti Abbey, a monastic community in the Tibetan Buddhist tradition, will host a “Sharing the Dharma Day” on Sunday from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. at 692 Country Lane in Newport, Wash.

New Orleans story

A displaced New Orleans pastor and his wife who lost their home and church building to Hurricane Katrina will speak Sunday at 2 p.m. at Menno Mennonite Church, 1738 N. Damon Road in Ritzville.

Pastor Charles and Thirawer Duplessis are living in Tuskegee, Ala., until they can rebuild their home in New Orleans. Duplessis returns once a month to preach to the remaining members of his Mt. Nebo Bible Baptist Church congregation.
