Cougars lose to Sooners after three wins

The Washington State baseball team fell to Oklahoma 14-2 on Sunday to wrap up a non-conference four-game series with No. 25 Oklahoma at Dale Mitchell Park in Norman, Okla.

The Sooners (15-5) outhit Washington State 18-4 to avoid a four-game sweep. The Cougars (13-5) closed out their six-game, three-city road trip with a 3-3 record.

On Sunday, Oklahoma’s Andrew Doyle earned the win, while James Wise (0-1) took the loss for the Cougars.

Washington State jumped out to a 1-0 lead in the first after a Paul Gran sacrifice fly and added another in the sixth on a Jared Prince RBI single before the Sooners pulled away with six runs in the third inning and four in the seventh.

The Cougars open Pac-10 play Thursday when they host California in a three-game series.

“The Whitworth baseball team dropped a Northwest Conference doubleheader to Pacific (Ore.) that was played at Gonzaga Prep’s field because of overnight snowfall.

The Bombers won 11-3 and 10-6.

In the first game Pacific (7-9 overall, 6-6 NWC) belted six home runs. Jon Whiteside led Whitworth (5-13, 4-8) in the second game with a three-run homer and five RBIs.

The Pirates play at Lewis & Clark later this week in a four-game NWC series.

Softball

Whitworth completed a four-game NWC sweep over George Fox, rolling to a 14-3 win in the opener and a 6-4 decision in the second game at Newberg, Ore.

In the first game, the Pirates (5-10, 4-8) hit three home runs, capped by Josie Ball’s third-inning grand slam that helped put the game away. Jessie LaPlante earned the win for Whitworth.

In the second game, the Pirates rallied to score four runs in the top of the seventh inning to pull away, with Halley Cey doubling with the bases loaded to push across the winning runs. LaPlante again was the winner.

Whitworth is idle until March 24 when the Pirates begin a four-day, eight-game spring-break road trip in California.
