Web-wacky idea: Recording calls to make a podcast

The Spokesman-Review

Not everyone will find this little tech tool nifty or cool.

It’s a phone-based system — free, for now — that lets you create an online audio podcast, without having to do more than call a toll-free number, then send people to the site to hear your oh-so-clever commentary.

Even simpler, once you tell your adoring public you are doing this, the new service, called Cinch, lets those listeners catch new podcasts/recordings via an RSS feed.

The new Cinch service, available at cinch.blog talkradio.com, might just be the simplest way ever devised to spread one’s wisdom across the Web. Or maybe it’s a silly toy that deserves to be laughed at on YouTube.

The process: You call the Cinch service at (646) 200-0000 and once you hear the beep, your record your thoughts or observations, or maybe a joke. Then send the Cinch Web address for your recordings to people who want to know your wonderful musings.

The address is cinch.blog radio.com.(phone number), using the number of the phone you called from. Anyone who opens that address loads the mp3 audio version of your recorded call. Anyone dying to hear your next installment signs up for the RSS feed from your address. No matter how many times you call, the Cinch service will send them a note and a link to your next podcast/call/whatever you want to call it.

It’s free for now but will likely move to a subscription plan sometime in the future.

While the sound quality is average, the service is so simple that it’s hard not to like, if only for the novelty of the whole thing.
