Area Roundup: Bulldogs lose a close one

Gonzaga freshman Reedy Berg gave up three first-inning runs and the Bulldogs couldn’t catch up, falling to visiting Utah Valley State 5-3 in a non-conference baseball game on Tuesday at Patterson Baseball Complex.

The Bulldogs (10-8) were led by juniors Ryan Wiegand and Jason Chatwood. Wiegand went 3 for 5 with two runs batted in, while Chatwood scored two runs and went 2 for 5.

Senior Marcus Moore led the Wolverines (4-11-1), pitching a complete game and giving up just three runs on seven hits with nine strikeouts.

“Washington State junior Ross Humes has been named Pac-10 Conference pitcher of the week.

Humes threw five shutout innings against No. 15 Wichita State and notched saves in both ends of a doubleheader against No. 25 Oklahoma. Humes is 1-0 with four saves in 14 shutout innings.

Golf

Senior Andrew Parrott finished fourth overall with a team-low 150 for fourth-place Whitworth, eight shots behind medalist Mitchell Evanecz of University of Victoria, at the Lewis-Clark State College Invitational in Clarkston.

North Idaho College was led by Ryan Carden (171).

Whitworth’s women finished fifth and were led by sophomore Krystal Pitkonen (173), who finished 14th overall. Alison Quinlan, medalist from Victoria, shot a 162. Melynda Bredis (203) led North Idaho.

“Idaho senior Kelly Nakashima was named the women’s Western Athletic Conference golfer of the week.

Nakashima shot 214 and finished in an eighth-place tie at the UNLV Spring Invitational at Boulder City, Nev. She helped her team finish ninth and was the highest WAC finisher.
