Seahawks sign Pro Bowl LB Tatupu through 2015

Loft Tatupu and the four-time defending NFC West champion Seattle Seahawks agreed on Friday to a $42 million contract extension that could keep him as the leader of Seattle’s defense through 2015.

The deal will also keep Tatupu from becoming a free agent after the 2009 season.

The deal reworks the final two years on the original contract he signed after being selected in the second round out of USC in 2005, plus six more years worth a potential $42 million.

“The Atlanta Falcons have agreed to terms with record-setting kicker Jason Elam.

“The Dallas Cowboys have held preliminary discussions with the Tennessee Titans about trading for suspended cornerback Adam “Pacman” Jones, according to multiple sources.

Sharapova loses

Svetlana Kuznetsova ended Maria Sharapova’s winning streak at 18 matches with a 6-3, 5-7, 6-2 victory in the Pacific Life Open semifinals at Indian Wells, Calif.

No. 2 Ana Ivanovic, a 7-6 (3), 6-3 winner over Jelena Jankovic, will meet Kuznetsova in the final.

On the men’s side, Mardy Fish, who had never made it beyond the fourth round at Indian Wells, added to his string of surprises in this year’s tournament with a 6-3, 6-7 (5), 7-6 (4) victory over David Nalbandian.

His next opponent is No. 1 Roger Federer, who is 5-0 against him.

Defending champion and No. 2 Rafael Nadal will play No. 3 Novak Djokovic in the other semifinal.

Figure skating

French pair win dance

Isabelle Delobel and Olivier Schoenfelder of France won the ice dance title at the World Figure Skating Championships at Goteborg, Sweden, and Americans Tanith Belbin and Ben Agosto are going home without a medal for the first time since 2004.

Ogilvy still leads

Geoff Ogilvy saved par four times from a bunker to remain bogey-free over the first two rounds at Doral, and he finished with a 5-under-par 67 for a one-shot lead over Tiger Woods (66) going into the weekend of this World Golf Championship at Doral, Fla.

“At Rio Grande, Puerto Rico, Bo Van Pelt, seeking his first PGA Tour victory, shot a 4-under 68 to take a one-stroke lead halfway through the inaugural Puerto Rico Open.

Taurasi re-signs

Diana Taurasi is staying with the WNBA’s Phoenix Mercury, signing a three-year contract to remain with the defending champions.

“At Eindhoven, Netherlands, Alain Bernard of France shattered the 100-meter freestyle world record with a time of 47.60 seconds at the European swimming championships.

“At Columbus, Ohio, Arizona swam to two more relay records and had four individuals finish in the top five of their events, and the Wildcats retained the lead after the second of three days of the NCAA Women’s Swimming and Diving Championships.
