Spokane gallery wins Webby Award

From Staff Reports The Spokesman-Review

Spokane’s unorthodox online art gallery, Artocracy.org, won a “people’s voice” Webby Award, company owner Megan Murphy said Tuesday.

Artocracy was one of five Web sites nominated for best site in the arts division. The annual Webby Awards selects winners in more than 100 categories.

The competition has both a judges’ winner and a popular-vote winner, based on ballots cast at the Webby Awards’ Web site. Murphy won that award in part due to efforts on Facebook and MySpace to promote her site.

A Museum of Modern Art site devoted to sculptor Richard Serra was the judges’ winner in the art division. The only other Northwest site to win a Webby this year is Seattle-based Zillow.com.

All the work at Murphy’s site, started in 2005, is digital. Buyers can download a work, then print it. Murphy also offers to print and frame works.
