Sea kayaks rule at Tacoma symposium

Test paddle boats from different manufacturers, attend seminars and join on-water technique clinics during the Puget Sound Sea Kayak Symposium, May 17-18, at Owen Beach in Tacoma’s Point Defiance Park.

More than 50 commercial exhibitors will line the beach to help paddlers learn about and purchase equipment. Day passes $30 if purchased by Monday.

Fish Lake Trail needs your muscle

What: Fish Lake Rail Trail volunteer maintenance project.

When: Saturday starting at 9 a.m.

Where: Meet at St. Matthews Baptist Church, 2815 W. Sunset Blvd.

Who: All volunteers welcome; sponsored by REI and Inland Northwest Trails Coalition.

Details: Third annual project will focus on improving Marshall Road trailhead, trimming brush, removing weeds and more. Bring water, work gloves, and one or more of the following: rake, hoe, pick, shovel, pruning shears or saw.

Williams Lake Derby to benefit Shriners Hospital for Children, May 18, starting 6 a.m.; weigh-in 1:30 p.m., based out of Klink’s Williams Lake Resort. Extra trout will be stocked for event. Prizes for adult and youth divisions. Entry: $10.
