Gonzaga University

Development approved

Spokane’s hearing examiner has approved a shoreline development and conditional use permit for Gonzaga University to develop a new soccer complex on its campus just north of the Spokane River, and within the 100-foot setback governed by the city’s shoreline law.

The decision by Hearing Examiner Greg Smith last Friday requires restoration of the river bank with native plantings and a habitat management plan to include the area surrounding Lake Arthur. A landscape plan must be professionally done and indicate non-native plants that will be removed. The plants must be cared for until they are established, but the care cannot include pruning or shaping. Removal of woody plants will require approval of the city’s shoreline administrator.

The university wants to replace an existing soccer field with a competition-quality field meeting NCAA requirements and with better drainage, irrigation and turf. Improvements include a press box, plaza, seating, lighting, ticket booth, restrooms, lockers and concession facilities.
