Idaho voters head to the polls Tuesday to choose Republican and Democratic nominees for various state and local offices.

Highlights include contested primaries for the U.S. Senate seat currently held by Larry Craig, whose Minneapolis arrest in a bathroom sex sting has given the race national interest. Eight candidates are vying for the GOP nomination and two are seeking the Democratic nomination. Winners of each party will face off in November, as well as two independent candidates and a Libertarian.

Several hotly contested GOP primaries are on the ballot in Kootenai County, including races for county commission, sheriff and the Idaho Legislature.

Fuse blamed for fumes that sickened workers

A malfunctioning electrical fuse caused fumes that sent nine employees of a Sandpoint manufacturing plant to a hospital for treatment.

Bonner County deputy EMS chief Matt Avidan said 23 employees of Unicep Packaging received medical attention Friday after inhaling fumes and nine were taken to Bonner County General Hospital after feeling nauseated and having difficulty breathing. All were later released.

Unicep Packaging general manager Marcus Anderson said a fuse on a piece of equipment welded itself shut instead of popping after an electrical overload.

Avidan said says the fuse emitted smoke, but there was never an open flame in the building.
