Flood maps topic of meeting

Property owners in the Chester Creek, Argonne Creek and Forker Creek areas are invited to attend a meeting tonight at Spokane Valley City Hall.

City, state and federal officials will be on hand from 7 to 8:30 p.m. to explain new federal flood maps that could hit some residents of those areas in the pocketbook.

The maps, if approved by the Federal Emergency Management Agency, would determine who has to buy flood insurance. They also would be used in city decisions about land use and construction.

The new flood designations may benefit many property owners in the Chester Creek area, but officials say some residents there and elsewhere may find the new maps detrimental.

City officials are collecting appeals from people who believe there are errors in the new flood plain data. Appeals must be delivered to City Hall by 5 p.m. Jan. 26.

The address is: Spokane Valley City Hall, 11707 E. Sprague Ave., Suite 106, Spokane Valley, WA 99206.

To view the maps or get more information, visit the city’s Web site at www.spokanevalley.org or call the Community Development Department at 688-0050.

STCU awarded for being ‘green’

Spokane Teachers Credit Union’s Liberty Lake Branch was recently awarded a silver level certification for sustainable building design and performance by the U.S. Green Building Council.

The STCU office is only the fourth certified “green” building in the Spokane area and one of the first credit union branch locations in the Pacific Northwest to receive the honor, according to the council.

The council uses a rating system called “Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design,” to identify the greenest, most energy efficient and high performing buildings. The standard encourages sustainable building by recognizing environmental performance and workplace health and financial return.

The Liberty Lake Branch achieved certification for energy use, lighting, water and material use. Branch floors are covered with recycled carpet and tile. Sensors regulate air quality and lighting for employees, saving energy and improving workplace health. The branch buys wind power and uses natural light and recycled paper products.

In addition, the branch location’s drive-through and parking lot are made of concrete to reduce atmospheric heat. The branch is next to public bus lines and convenient parking spaces are reserved for fuel-efficient vehicles.
