Sayrs concedes county race

Democratic challenger Brian Sayrs conceded Wednesday in his race against Republican incumbent Mark Richard for Spokane County Commission.

A race that was separated by about 3,000 votes in early counting had grown to a deficit of more than 10,300 votes by late Wednesday. The latest figures had Richard leading 88,426 to 78,084.

“Being a reality-based candidate, I will always accept the ruling of the people and look forward to serving in the future,” said Sayrs, a seven-year member of the Liberty Lake City Council.

Richard said he was glad to avoid a similar scenario to four years ago when the race with Bill Burke was so close that it wasn’t called until two weeks after the election.

“I have nightmares about going around four years ago in a daze, picking up my signs,” he said. “We will continue to work hard, maintain and build a working relationship with Mr. Sayrs and keep working forward with the issues important to the community.”
