EVHS students perform ‘Anne Frank’

East Valley High School drama students will unveil their first performance of the season on Thursday, “The Diary of Anne Frank.” The students will be performing a new version of the powerful play by Frances Goodrich and Albert Hackett, adapted by Wendy Kesselman.

The play follows the well-known story of Anne Frank, who hid from the Nazis in an attic with her family and others for years before finally being discovered, and later dying in a concentration camp. Her father, who survived the camps, later published her diary.

Stephanie Albertson will play Anne Frank, with Wayne Yocom and Ashley Gren playing her parents. Other performers include Krisztine Mendez as Margot Frank, Cody Groth as Mr. Van Daan, Tonya Strong as Mrs. Van Daan, Joshua Jolstead as Peter Van Daan, Anthony VanDuzee as Mr. Dussel, Tanner Treadwell as Mr. Kraler and Shauna Lee as Meip. The roles of Nazi soldiers will be played by Joe Rouse, Brian Benge and Tony Lee.

Performances of the play begin at 7 p.m. Thursday through next Saturday and Nov. 20 through 22 at the school, 15711 E. Wellesley Ave. Admission is $5 for adults and $3 for seniors and students. Children 11 and younger and students with an ASB card are free.

Art program receives donation

The art program at North Pines Middle School recently received a donation of five digital cameras from Horizon Credit Union.

The cameras will be used by art teacher Mary Pat Kanaley and her students. Horizon will also begin monthlong displays of students at work at their branch on South Pines.

Turkey Trot

The annual Turkey Trot fun run at East Farms Elementary is set for Nov. 22 at 9 a.m. All ages may enter races of either one mile or three miles. The winner of the three-mile race will win a frozen turkey. T-shirts are available to runners who register in advance, and a pancake breakfast will be served at Mountain View Middle School, 6011 N. Chase Road, at 9:30 a.m.

Check-in and late registration begins at 8 a.m. at East Farms, 26203 E. Rowan Ave.. The cost is $5 per person or $20 per family. T-shirts are $10 before Wednesday only. Call 226-3921 to register. The breakfast is $5 per person or $20 per family.

Proceeds from the race benefit the East Farms PTSA. Proceeds from the breakfast will benefit the Mountain View Parent Group.

Cancer fundraiser a success

Students at Central Valley High School raised more than $1,700 in support of Karen Hittle, wife of principal Mike Hittle, on Oct. 30.

Students turned the varsity football game into an event against pancreatic cancer, wearing purple instead of school colors. They sold more than 300 purple “Paws for PanCan” T-shirts and distributed 1,500 purple balloons and pom poms during the game. Karen Hittle was recently diagnosed with pancreatic cancer.
