The matchups

By Terry Bannon Chicago Tribune

Saints at Falcons

Time: 10 a.m. Line: Falcons by 1.

Records: Saints (4-4); Falcons (5-3)

Saints: Saints are 0-3 on the road but come in rested after bye week. They’ve beaten Falcons four straight times, and their No. 1-rated offense (403 yards per game) could force Falcons into shootout.

Falcons: Falcons are 3-0 at home, but two came against Lions and Chiefs. Falcons’ only quality win was last-second triumph over Bears, so they still have something to prove.

Fantasy outlook: Drew Brees has thrown seven TD passes in last four games vs. Falcons, and has tossed 15 this season. Falcons rookie Matt Ryan has thrown three TD passes and no interceptions at home.

Injuries: Saints RB Reggie Bush is still dealing with a knee injury… . Falcons OT Sam Baker (hip, back) is still out.

Titans at Bears

Time: 10 a.m. TV: CBS

Line: Titans by 3.

Records: Titans (8-0); Bears (5-3)

Titans: Titans have been winning with efficient offense, tough defense and by winning turnover margin – NFL-best plus-10 turnover differential. That formula will win again.

Bears: The ankle injury that will keep Kyle Orton out suddenly makes the passing game suspect, unless hot Rex Grossman shows up. Defense may have to lead way.

Fantasy outlook: Titans rookie Chris Johnson has run for five TDs and is averaging 4.9 yards per carry. Bears need second straight 100-yard game from rookie Matt Forte, who ran for 126 last week.

Injuries: DE Kyle VandenBosch (knee) and LB Keith Bullock (ribs) questionable for Titans. … Bears QB Kyle Orton almost certainly out with ankle injury. S Mike Brown (calf) questionable.

Jaguars at Lions

Time: 10 a.m. Line: Jags by 6 1/2 .

Records: Jaguars (3-5); Lions (0-8)

Jaguars: Coach Jack Del Rio moved some players to new lockers this week to improve team chemistry. We’ll see if it helps. Jaguars have lost to Browns and Bengals since their bye week, failing to get much of anything going on offense.

Lions: Lions have added veteran QB Daunte Culpepper and may start him this week to replace injured Dan Orlovsky. Lions were in game vs. Bears to end last week, so they’re getting closer to that elusive 1st win.

Fantasy outlook: Jaguars’ Maurice Jones-Drew has rushed for six TDs and averages 4.2 yards per carry. Lions’ best hope is to get ball to receiver Calvin Johnson, whose six TD receptions rank second in NFL. He’s averaging 18.4 yards per catch.

Injuries: Orlovsky has a sore thumb.

Ravens at Texans

Time: 10 a.m. Line: Pick ’em.

Records: Ravens (5-3); Texans (3-5)

Ravens: Ravens have won three straight by unusually high (for them) average score of 31-17. Rookie QB Joe Flacco holds his own and defense is second in NFL.

Texans: Sage Rosenfels takes over at quarterback for injured Matt Schaub, and Texans need him to play better than he did in loss to Colts six weeks ago, when two fumbles paved way to defeat. Texans were 4-1 in his starts in ’07.

Fantasy outlook: In three-game winning streak, Flacco has completed 60.5 percent with four TD passes and no interceptions. Rosenfels has completed 67.7 percent with three TDs and two INTs this season.

Injuries: Ravens CB Chris McAlister (knee) is out, but CB Samari Rolle due back from neck injury. … Texas QB Matt Schaub (knee) out 2-4 weeks. LB Zac Diles (broken leg) is out for season.

Packers at Vikings

Time: 10 a.m. Line: Vikings by 2 1/2 .

Records: Packers (4-4); Vikings (4-4)

Packers: Aaron Rodgers completed 18 of 22 passes in season-opening victory over Vikings, and his solid start netted contract extension through 2014. But Packers haven’t run ball enough to complement the passing game.

Vikings: Vikings have won four of Gus Frerotte’s six starts and have won last three at home after loss to Colts. Adrian Peterson’s running can control ball.

Fantasy outlook: Greg Jennings has 40 catches, four for TDs for Packers. Vikings’ Bernard Berrian has 19 catches for 426 yards and four TDs in last four games.

Injuries: Vikings DE Jared Allen (seven sacks) is dealing with shoulder injury. … Packers OT Chad Clifton (illness) is questionable.

Bills at Patriots

Time: 10 a.m. Line: Patriots by 3 1/2 .

Records: Bills (5-3); Patriots (5-3)

Bills: Pivotal AFC East meeting, especially for Bills, who are on road and have lost three out of four. Bills are at risk of becoming one-dimensional offense, and passing game is hard to sustain.

Patriots: Pats have beaten Bills nine straight and have settled in with improving Matt Cassel at quarterback. In last three home games (two wins), Cassel has thrown five TD passes vs. three INTs.

Fantasy outlook: Receivers may decide it: Bills’ Lee Evans has 35 catches, three for TDs; Pats’ Wes Welker is third in NFL with 56 catches, but only one TD.

Injuries: Bills S Donte Whitner (shoulder) is out.

Rams at Jets

Time: 10 a.m. Line: Jets by 9.

Records: Rams (2-6); Jets (5-3)

Rams: Rams head into second half with little going right. Steven Jackson must get back to 100 percent after quad injury.

Jets: Jets, who have won three of last four, are in thick of AFC East race.

Fantasy outlook: Rams rookie receiver Donnie Avery has 13 catches and two TD receptions in last three games. Jets’ Brett Favre has thrown 15 TD passes, second in AFC.

Injuries: Rams LB Chris Draft (broken foot) is out.

Panthers at Raiders

Time: 1:05 p.m. Line: Panthers by 9.

Records: Panthers (6-2); Raiders (2-6)

Panthers: Panthers won two straight and four of five before last week’s bye.

Raiders: Raiders are 1-3 under interim coach Tom Cable, and have been outscored 100-29. Offense won’t get going again until quarterback JaMarcus Russell has big game.

Fantasy outlook: Panthers WR Steve Smith has averaged 108.6 yards with four TDs in last five games.

Injuries: Panthers DT Darwin Walker (neck) is questionable.

Colts at Steelers

Time: 1:15 p.m. TV: CBS

Line: Steelers by 4.

Records: Colts (4-4); Steelers (6-2)

Colts: Colts buoyed by last week’s win over Patriots, but offensive consistency remains problem. Going on road against rugged defense will be challenge.

Steelers: Steelers may have to go with backup QB Byron Leftwich, but he was starter for Jaguars and filled in well last week. They can also win with running game.

Fantasy outlook: Reggie Wayne is Colts’ go-to receiver with 43 catches, four for TDs.

Injuries: Steelers QB Ben Roethlisberger is probable with shoulder injury. TE Heath Miller (ankle) is doubtful. … Colts CB Kelvin Hayden (hamstring) is questionable.

Chiefs at Chargers

Time: 1:15 p.m. Line: Chargers by 15.

Records: Chiefs (1-7); Chargers (3-5)

Chiefs: Chiefs still losing, but at least they’re closing gap and establishing they can score. They’ve been outscored 58-51 by Jets and Bucs last two weeks.

Chargers: The Chargers used bye week to fire defensive coordinator Ted Cottrell and promote linebackers coach Ron Rivera. That’s only part of problem.

Fantasy outlook: In last two games, QB Tyler Thigpen has completed 63.9 percent of his passes with three TDs and no interceptions. Chargers Philip Rivers is also hot – in last three games, with eight TD passes and two INTs.

Injuries: Chiefs LB Derrick Johnson (hamstring) is questionable.

Giants at Eagles

Time: 5:15 p.m. TV: NBC

Line: Eagles by 3.

Records: Giants (7-1); Eagles (5-3)

Giants: Except for clinker against Cleveland, Giants have risen to every challenge, and this is big one. They’ve won 12 of their last 13 road games, but this one will be tough.

Eagles: Three straight victories have given Eagles momentum, and they need to win if they’re going to make NFC East race interesting.

Fantasy outlook: Giants’ Brandon Jacobs averages 5.2 yards per carry with seven rushing TDs. Eagles’ Donovan McNabb is 7-3 against the Giants with 14 TD passes and three INTs.

Injuries: Eagles CB Lito Sheppard (groin) may not play.
