Vandals in WAC volleyball semis

If the third-seeded Idaho Vandals don’t win the Western Athletic Conference volleyball tournament title, it won’t be because of the Nevada Wolf Pack – this time.

Sarah Conwell collected 12 kills and the Vandals hit 25 percent as a team in a 25-20, 25-21, 25-18 sweep of the sixth-seeded Wolf Pack in the quarterfinals of the WAC tournament at Honolulu.

Nevada (12-15) had eliminated the Vandals (19-9) from two of the past three WAC tournaments.

Haley Larsen added 10 kills and two service aces, while Sarah Loney and Kelsey Yonker had nine digs apiece for Idaho.

The Vandals will face the winner of Thursday’s Hawaii vs. Boise State match in the late semifinal tonight. San Jose State will face New Mexico State in the earlier semifinal.

•Rosa Medrano had 17 kills and Cristina Castrillon had nine kills and 11 digs to lead Miami Dade to a 25-18, 25-19, 26-24 victory over North Idaho College at the NJCAA Division I championship tournament at Council Bluffs, Iowa.

North Idaho (31-11) will face Northwest Shoals (38-7) in a loser-out match today.

Marketa Hanzlova paced NIC with nine kills and six blocks. Emily Callaway added 10 blocks.

•Meghan De La Rosa had 28 assists and Alex Cey (Mead HS) had 12 digs and the CC Spokane Sasquatch overcame a first-round loss to beat Pierce CC 25-17, 26-24 at the NWAACC championships in Gresham, Ore.

In the first round, Whatcom claimed a 25-19, 29-27, 21-25, 25-22 decision over CCS.

The Sasquatch will face the Edmonds/Green River loser today.

Women’s soccer

Natalie Nichols (Post Falls HS) scored two goals and Kylee Williamson (East Valley HS) scored a goal and assisted on both of Nichols’ goals and North Idaho opened the NJCAA Division I championship tournament with a 3-2 victory over Navarro College at Chandler, Ariz.

The Cardinals (13-5-2) will face Lewis & Clark (Ill.) (25-1) today in the semifinals.

Venicia Reed scored two goals for the Bulldogs (16-2-1).

Women’s basketball

April Cook scored 18 points to lead Washington State to an 85-76 victory over Boise State, snapping the Broncos’ 19-game home winning streak.

Cook was one of five Cougars to score in double figures. Katie Appleton had 16 points, Jazmine Perkins had 15, Rosie Tarnowski scored 13 and Heather Molzen had 11 as Washington State evened its record at 1-1. Boise State is 2-1.

•Liz Horiatis scored 18 points and pulled down 13 rebounds and the Whitworth Pirates opened their season with a 63-44 victory over the Chaminade Silverswords at Honolulu.

Natalie Orrell added 15 points for Whitworth. Samantha Saito led Chaminade (0-4) with 14 points.

Girls basketball

Trailing by one with 20 seconds left, the Wallace Miners stole the ball twice but missed a field goal and a free throw and dropped a 26-25 decision to the Lakeland JV at Wallace.

•Six players scored in double figures and the Coeur d’Alene JV routed Kootenai 121-18 at Coeur d’Alene.

College wrestling

North Idaho College claimed five decisions, including Lucas Chesher (Central Valley HS) at 157 pounds, and beat Clackamas 21-14 at Oregon City, Ore.
