MOOSE JAW, Saskatchewan – The Spokane Chiefs used an effective penalty-killing unit and a potent offense to end a three-game losing skid.
Levko Koper scored two goals and Drayson Bowman and Mitch Wahl added a goal and two assists apiece and Spokane held Moose Jaw to one goal in seven power-play opportunities in a 6-2 Western Hockey League victory at the Civic Centre Friday night.
Koper opened the scoring with his 15th goal of the season – on the power play – 6 minutes, 58 seconds into the game with help from Tyler Johnson and Seth Compton.
The Warriors answered less than 5 minutes later with a power-play goal when Quinton Howden converted with help from Chad Suer and goaltender Jeff Bosch.
Bowman gave the Chiefs a short-lived 2-1 lead with his 11th tally of the season at 2:54 of the second. Jason Bast of Moose Jaw (7-15-0-1, 15 points) knotted the score at 2 at 6:09.
The Chiefs (15-7-0-3, 33 points) scored four straight goals – by Wahl, Koper again, Compton and Stefan Ulmer – to put the game away.
Spokane maintained its one-point U.S. Division-lead over the Tri-City Americans. Tri-City beat Chilliwack 2-0 on the road Friday night.
James Reid got the start in net for the Chiefs and collected 27 saves while picking up his third victory of the season.
Spokane wraps up its six-game Eastern Division swing at Swift Current tonight. A victory would make for a .500 road trip.
