WVHS marching band completes season

The West Valley High School marching band has just closed another successful season.

The cap to the season was an invitation to play at today’s Washington State School Directors Association state convention. The band will be performing its 2008 fall show “Cirque du Soleil.”

The marching band took second place in Class AA at the Pasco Invitational, also taking home awards for Best Marching, Best Percussion and Best General Effect (music and marching). Class AA includes all bands that have between 55 and 75 members.

At the Harvest Festival of Bands in Yakima the band placed 10th overall in the preliminaries out of 20 competitors and ninth place in the finals. West Valley also captured first place in Class AA, winning awards for Best Brass and Woodwinds, Best Percussion and Pit, Best Color Guard, Best Marching, Best General Effect and Best Drum Majors.

The final competition was in Auburn in early November, where the band placed seventh overall out of 28 bands in all divisions. West Valley took second place in the Class AA field show competition.

Food drive

The students of Central Valley High School, led by the Key Club, is collecting food for the Spokane Valley Partners Food Bank.

The drive is aimed at helping families during the Christmas holiday and will run Dec. 1 to 15. The fifth-period classes will compete against each other to see who can collect the most food. The winning class will get a pizza party.

“Average is about 85,000 items and between $5,000 and $10,000,” said ASB adviser Leanne Donley. “We’ve had a couple years where we topped 135,000. It’s astronomical what the kids can do.”

Community members can drop off food at the school office, 821 S. Sullivan Road, between 7 a.m. and 4 p.m. Central Valley students and Spokane Valley Kiwanis members will also staff a donation table at the URM Cash and Carry Store, 16808 E. Sprague Ave.
