CC Spokane falls to Chemeketa in soccer semis

Gustavo Bermudez scored a pair of goals to propel the Chemeketa Storm to a 4-0 victory over the Community Colleges of Spokane Sasquatch in the Northwest Athletic Conference of Community Colleges men’s soccer semifinals on Saturday at Starfire Stadium in Tukwila, Wash.

Joel Duenas and Alex Espraza added unassisted goals for the Storm, who scored twice in each half.

Chemeketa (14-2-6) will play Walla Walla – a 1-0 winner over Peninsula – for the conference championship today.

CCS finished 13-8-3.

Cross country

The Whitworth Pirates’ first trip to the NCAA Division III championships in Hanover, Ind., was a difficult one.

The Pirates finished 31st in the 32-team meet.

Nick Gallagher paced Whitworth – finishing 103rd out of 280 runners. He finished the 8,000-meter race in 25 minutes, 37.52 seconds.

Cortland State totaled 80 points to win team honors. Whitworth finished with 745 points.

Peter Kosgei of Hamilton won the race with a time of 24:22.09.

The good news for the Whits is that six of their seven runners return next season.

Volleyball

Jessica Clemens notched a match-high 16 kills and K.C. Fox added 14 kills to lead the Portland Pilots (7-23, 1-13) to a 25-18, 25-17, 18-25, 25-23 victory over the Gonzaga Bulldogs in a West Coast Conference regular-season finale at Martin Centre.

Elaina Renius led the Bulldogs (10-21, 3-11) with 13 kills. Michelle Boevers and Layne Brosky added 10 kills apiece.

Paige Dillingham had a match-high 16 digs. Denise Van de Mortel paced the Bulldogs with 37 assists.

It was Senior Day for Dillingham, Renius and Tianna Tuatagaloa.

Renius topped the 1,000 career kills plateau with her effort against Portland. She is the 11th Zag to accomplish the feat.

Renius also finished the season with 39 solo blocks, one shy of tying the Zags’ single-season record of 40 set by Lisa Petticord in 1988.

Kaylyn Jones had 53 assists for the Pilots, who earned their first WCC win of the season.
