Carlesimo no longer OK in O.K.

The losses kept piling up for P.J. Carlesimo, and it didn’t matter which city – Seattle or Oklahoma City – his team called home.

With the relocated Oklahoma City Thunder off to an NBA-worst 1-12 start, Carlesimo was fired as coach Saturday and replaced on an interim basis by assistant Scott Brooks. Brooks will remain head coach for the remainder of the season, said general manager Sam Presti.

The firing – the first of an NBA coach this season – followed a 105-80 defeat to the New Orleans Hornets on Friday night for the Thunder’s 10th straight loss.

Dantley’s son beats Irish

Cameron Dantley, son of one of Notre Dame’s all-time basketball greats, threw an 11-yard TD pass with 42 seconds left to lead Syracuse to a 24-23 victory in South Bend, Ind., one of the most surprising upsets in Fighting Irish history.

The Orange trailed 23-10 in the fourth quarter before rallying as Notre Dame struggled mightily on offense. The Irish came away with just six points after starting four times inside the Syracuse 23-yard line.

The victory allowed Syracuse (3-8) to avoid a third 10-loss season in four years.

For the Irish (6-5), losing to a 19 1/2 -point underdog ranks among their worst setbacks and leaves Charlie Weis with a 28-20 record in four seasons.

Tiller goes out big winner

Purdue provided the perfect ending to Joe Tiller’s tenure in West Lafayette, Ind.

The offense didn’t stop scoring, the defense gave up nearly nothing and Tiller got his hands back on the Old Oaken Bucket.

Curtis Painter threw for 448 yards and five touchdowns, and the Boilermakers scored on their first 10 possessions to roll past archrival Indiana 62-10 – matching the largest victory margin in Ross-Ade Stadium history set twice before, all under Tiller, a former Washington State assistant who is retiring.
