Pullman places fourth, West Valley fifth

The Pullman and West Valley volleyball teams did the Great Northern League proud Saturday at the State 2A tournament at the Toyota Center in Kennewick.

Pullman earned fourth place with a 25-14, 26-28, 25-16, 25-17 decision over Grandview and a 25-22, 25-16, 19-25, 25-21 victory over Burlington-Edison.

West Valley put together three victories to earn fifth. The Eagles topped North Mason 17-25, 25-21, 25-27, 25-22, 15-12, knocked off Hockinson 25-17, 23-25, 25-19, 26-24 and capped their run with a 25-21, 25-22, 25-19 sweep of Mark Morris.

Pullman earned a trophy with a young team and first-year coach. The Greyhounds will bring back 12 of 14 players next year.

“We’ve got a great group of young talented girls and they worked very hard to get here,” Pullman coach Josie Herold said. “I knew they would do well. Now that they’ve had state experience it will be good for next year.”

Shelby Cheslek and Jenny Nakata led Pullman with 11 kills apiece against B-E and Stephanie Logan had 19 kills against Grandview.

Bailey Wold had 57 kills in WV’s three matches.

Girls soccer

Mikayla Anderson gave Mead a quick lead and the Panthers breezed to a 3-1 victory over Jackson earning the third-place trophy at the State 4A tournament in Lakewood.

Anderson took a short pass from Jill Pecka and tapped it in just 5 minutes into the match to put the Panthers (19-2) up 1-0.

Lindsey Pangborn scored an unassisted goal in the 30th minute to stretch Mead’s lead to 2-0. Breanne Taylor upped the lead to 3-0 with a goal at the 49-minute mark. Pecka picked up her second assist on the score.

Jackson (16-3-1) avoided a shutout when Cara Wegner found the net with 1 minute left to play.

Prep football

Skyline defeated Auburn in a State 4A football quarterfinal and will face Ferris in the semifinals next weekend. Ferris will be the home team. The site, day and time of the game have not been determined.
