Man accused of stabbings arrested

He’s being held on $1 million bail

A 57-year-old Spokane man was arrested Monday on suspicion of stabbing one man to death and critically injuring another.

Craig M. Heinz faces charges of second-degree murder and first-degree assault, Spokane Police Officer Tim Moses said.

Heinz, aka Craig M. Heiny, is being held in Spokane County Jail on $1 million bail.

Jason Casey died on the way to the hospital, police said. The other victim, Mark Russell, was in critical condition at Sacred Heart Medical Center on Monday.

Heinz gave police two versions of events that led to the violence, according to an arrest document. The first was that the men were strangers who showed up at his house for a beer. After he invited them in, they tried to rob him, he told police.

The second version: Heinz met the men at a restaurant and invited them to his home, but a fight ensued when one of the men made a sexual advance on him, the document states.

Police found the bloody crime scene in Heinz’s Browne’s Addition apartment at 1909 W. First Ave. late Sunday.

Casey and Russell, whose ages and hometowns were not immediately available, were each stabbed in the throat with a black-handled letter opener or knife, according to the document.
