Cheney’s boys outrace Colville

Cheney’s boys (4-0) took over undisputed first place in Great Northern League cross country Tuesday with a 1-2-3 finish and 21-34 win in Colville against the previously unbeaten Indians (3-1).

The Blackhawks’ Arick Zachman won in 15 minutes, 56 seconds. Reese Martin (second) and Daniel Issa finished 7 seconds apart to assure victory. Cheney had five scorers finish among the top 10 during the three-way meet. Cheney and Colville both beat Medical Lake (1-2). Next week, the Blackhawks are at Riverside (3-1). … Elsewhere, Riverside beat host West Valley (2-2) by virtue of a higher-finishing sixth runner after the teams tied at 28 at Plantes Ferry Park. WV’s Justin Degenhardt and Michael White ran a convincing 1-2, but Riverside had five of the next six placers. Both teams beat Clarkston (0-3) … The first five finishers were from Pullman (1-2) in the Greyhounds’ 15-44 win at Deer Park (0-3).

In girls competition, Cheney (4-0) had three of the top four placers and also remained undefeated with 23-32 and 15-48 wins over host Colville (1-3) and Medical Lake (0-3). Shelby Maurer won in 20:20. … Host Deer Park (3-0) had the top five finishers for a 15-44 win over Pullman. Chantel Duenich timed 19:41 and Jessica Duenich 20:18 for DP. … Amanda Wilson timed 20:00 for a key victory as Riverside (3-1) defeated host West Valley (2-2) 23-36 and Clarkston 16-51..

Girls soccer

Great Northern League: A scoreless game affected by windy conditions came down to a shootout when league unbeatens West Valley (8-0, 7-0) and Pullman (7-2, 6-1) collided. Host WV prevailed 1-0 on the eighth penalty kick 3-2. … Jessica Ziemann scored near the end of the first half and host Cheney (7-3, 6-2) held on 1-0 against Medical Lake (4-6, 3-5). … Haley Imel got a foot on a loose ball inside the 18-yard box and scored the winner 8 minutes into the second half as Clarkston (2-5, 2-5) edged visiting Riverside (1-8, 1-6) 3-2. Clarkston’s Angelina Tenwick scored twice in the first half. … Stevie Harris had a goal and two assists in Deer Park’s (5-4, 4-3) 4-0 home win over Colville (0-9, 0-7).

Inland Empire League: Coeur d’Alene and Sandpoint set up their Thursday showdown for the league title with identical 1-0 victories, both on the road. CdA (9-4-3, 6-0-3) broke a scoreless deadlock in the 70th minute when Sadie Simon scored on an assist from Haley Smith during a victory at Moscow (4-7-5, 1-6-3). … Sandpoint (10-3-3, 7-0-2) got its goal early to defeat Lake City (5-4-6, 3-2-5). Bailey Hewitt scored at the 14-minute mark. CdA will host the 4 p.m. Thursday match. … In the league’s other game, Lewiston’s Gretchen Kiely scored on an assist from Jamie Gates at the 42nd minute as the Bengals (3-11-0, 2-8-0) defeated visiting Post Falls (4-10-1, 3-5-2) 2-1.

Boys soccer

Inland Empire League: Tanner Williams scored on a strike from 30 yards out at the 44th minute as Sandpoint (15-1-0, 9-1-0) defeated visiting Lake City (8-4-2, 7-2-1) 2-1 for the league championship. Williams’ goal staked the Bulldogs to a 2-0 lead. … Robby Astin put Coeur d’Alene (7-7, 5-5) ahead early against Moscow (10-3-2, 7-3-1) during a 2-1 win at home. Forrest Walker made it 2-0 13 minutes into the second half. … Griffin Horner’s three goals fueled Post Falls (3-10-1, 1-8-1) past visiting Lewiston (0-12-1, 0-9-1) 4-0.

Non-league: Host Kellogg blanked Lakeland 2-0 on goals by Ryder Ashcraft and Lee Fink.

Volleyball

Great Northern League: Pullman (7-0) recorded a 25-10, 25-11, 25-12 victory at Cheney (1-6). Jordan Levenseller had 10 kills and four assists. … West Valley (6-1) remained in close pursuit, winning 25-14, 25-13, 25-14 at Deer Park (2-5). Shaniqua Nilles had 10 kills and two blocks, and Alyssa Wold 29 assists. … Third-place Colville (6-2) swept host Medical Lake (1-6) 25-10, 25-14, 25-21. … Riverside (4-3) won in Clarkston (2-6) 25-8, 25-16, 25-20.

Inland Empire League: Sandpoint (10-1) handed Coeur d’Alene (8-1) its first league loss, 13-25, 25-21, 25-21, 25-21. CdA’s Natalie Stewart had 28 assists and five aces. …Lake City (3-6) defeated host Moscow (4-7) in five games, winning 15-8 after splitting the first four by two-point decisions. LC’s Rose Brooks had 22 digs.

Intermountain League: St. Maries (8-0) won 25-14, 25-12, 25-12 at home over Bonners Ferry (1-5). Michelle Guidry had 19 assists and Tia Asbury 19 digs for the winners. … Kellogg (3-3) defeated host Timberlake (1-6) in four games at Spirit Lake, winning the first two by two points.

Non-league: Host Lakeland defeated Priest River in four games and Post Falls in three at Rathdrum.
