CCS instructors, staff honored

Community Colleges of Spokane administrators, faculty and classified staff were recently honored at fall orientation and welcome back events.

The Deccio Excellence in Equity Award, given annually to staff who demonstrate a strong commitment to the principles of equity and mission of CCS and who foster an appreciation for diversity at work and in their community was awarded to Tori Allison-Reiber, IEL seniors program instructor; Travis Merrigan, district director of recruitment and outreach; Rick Street, accounting instructor, Spokane Community College; and Barbara Williamson, English instructor, Spokane Falls Community College.

Spokane Teachers Credit Union awarded $1,500 STCU/CCS Foundation Exceptional Faculty Awards to 12 CCS instructors, selected based on a demonstrated concern for students’ educations, leadership skills, campus and community involvement and willingness to go above and beyond the call of duty.

Cindy Deffe, agriculture/horticulture; Sylvia Garcia, cosmetology; Paul Overfield, Toyota T-Ten automotive; and Andrea Reid, English, were the instructors awarded from SCC.

Asa Bradley, physics; Evelyn Florio, sociology; Lori Monnastes, English/ITALIC coordinator; and Charles Zimmerman, music, were the instructors awarded from SFCC.

And, IEL instructors Cielito Brekke (English as a second language); Kathy George (adult basic education); Pat Lamb (developmental education); and Luisa Orellana (English as a second language), received awards.

Paula Bresnahan, SFCC music department; Reggie Eans, District Human Resources Office; Jerry James, IEL Hillyard Center; and Sunni Strand, SCC physical education, received the Outstanding Classified Staff Award for “going the extra mile” for students and co-workers.

Kyla Bates, SFCC distance learning manager; Roxanne Beloit, IEL registrar; Vicki Bolks, SCC registrar; and Dennis Keen, SCC interim dean for arts and sciences received a $1,000 Saling Award for Excellence, recognized for the contributions of CCS professionals/exempt and midlevel administrators.

•Washington State Employees Credit Union awarded scholarships to the following area residents.

Hailey Parrish of Spokane and a student at Seattle University received a $2,000 scholarship.

Robert Abell of Davenport, Wash., and a student at Spokane Falls Community College received a $1,000 scholarship.

Andrew Lawson of Spokane and a student at Spokane Falls Community College received a $1,000 scholarship.

Sally Reynolds of Spokane was awarded The President’s Award for Community Service by the Washington chapter of the American Society of Landscape Architects for her many efforts to preserve Spokane’s historic neighborhoods, most notably, the Rockwood District.

•Two area residents were recently honored at Washington State University.

Michelle Arganbright was awarded an Ellen Abelson Memorial Graduate Fellowship from the College of Liberal Arts. She graduated from Central Valley High School in 1991 and is the daughter of Eileen Lovell of Spokane Valley and the late Joe Kistler.

Kale Stephenson was named an Outstanding Junior in the material science and engineering department. He graduated in 2005 from Pullman High School and is the son of Bryce and Nancy Stephenson of Pullman.
