Red Wings hoist banner, lose to Leafs in opener

The Detroit Red Wings hoisted an 11th Stanley Cup banner to the rafters Thursday night at Joe Louis Arena before their opener against Toronto.

Then the Maple Leafs put a damper on the celebration.

Pavel Kubina, Dominic Moore and Nikolai Kulemin scored, lifting the Toronto to a 3-2 win.

Gordie Howe and other former Red Wings passed the white banner with red stitching to current standouts such as Nicklas Lidstrom on the ice in a pregame ceremony.

Edwards, Harvick rumble

Kevin Harvick isn’t quite over a 12-car crash at Talladega (Ala.) Superspeedway started by Carl Edwards.

Witnesses said Edwards and Harvick scuffled in the Nationwide Series garage at Lowe’s Motor Speedway in Concord, N.C., after Edwards walked into Harvick’s garage stall and the two engaged in a heated argument.

Witnesses claimed a member of Harvick’s crew had Edwards in a headlock as numerous people tried to separate the two.

Edwards triggered the late crash Sunday when he tried to push Greg Biffle as the three Roush Fenway Racing cars competed raced for the lead. Several championship contenders were caught in the melee, including Harvick.

Hamlin cleared to race: Denny Hamlin was cleared to race Saturday night despite an overnight stay in an Alabama hospital following his hard wreck at Talladega Superspeedway.

Wake Forest wins

Riley Skinner threw a 7-yard touchdown pass to D.J. Boldin with 5:28 left to help No. 21 Wake Forest beat Clemson 12-7 at Winston-Salem, N.C.

Skinner was 22 of 34 for 186 yards and led the decisive 15-play, 78-yard drive in the fourth quarter for the Demon Deacons (4-1, 2-0 Atlantic Coast Conference). Wake Forest outgained Clemson 342-198 to snap a two-game losing streak in the series and remain the only Atlantic Division team with a perfect conference record.

Hasselbeck on for Sunday: Seattle Seahawks quarterback Matt Hasselbeck is still on for Sunday’s game against Green Bay.

One day after coach Mike Holmgren said Hasselbeck “has to play” for the Seahawks (1-3) against the Packers (2-3), third-string quarterback Charlie Frye again ran the offense. No. 2 quarterback Seneca Wallace is out indefinitely with a calf injury.

Jones won’t be punished: Troubled cornerback Adam “Pacman” Jones won’t be disciplined by the Dallas Cowboys for a scuffle with his bodyguard that team owner Jerry Jones said resulted from joking banter that got out of hand and was quickly settled.

Aussie leads Texas Open

Australia’s Nathan Green shot an 8-under-par 62 to take a two-stroke lead over Olin Browne and Paul Claxton in the Texas Open at San Antonio’s La Cantera Golf Club’s Resort Course.

Redman, Hjorth share lead: Michele Redman and Sweden’s Maria Hjorth shot 6-under 66s to share the first-round lead in the LPGA Tour’s Longs Drugs Challenge at Danville, Calif.

Wendy Ward of Edwall, Wash., shot 68 and is tied for fifth place. Kim Welch (Washington State University) shot 78.

Three share Senior lead: Phil Blackmar, Bruce Fleisher and Des Smyth shot 5-under 65s to share the first-round lead in the Senior Players Championship at Timonia, Md.

Mets’ Burgos jailed

New York Mets pitcher Ambiorix Burgos, 24, will be jailed for three months in Nagua, Dominican Republic while awaiting trial for a hit-and-run accident that killed two women.

The reliever said a Dominican judge ordered him to remain behind bars out of concerns for his safety.

Holyfield offered title fight: Evander Holyfield has been offered a fight with WBA heavyweight boxing champion Nikolai Valuev in December.

A four-time heavyweight champion, Holyfield, who turns 46 this month, could become the oldest fighter to win the crown.

Doping agents ignored: Nearly half the countries that participated in the Beijing Olympics failed to tell organizers where their athletes were so they could be drug tested outside of competition.

A report issued by the World Anti-Doping Agency said 102 of 205 countries represented did not provide Olympic officials with information about their athletes.

Cyclist Piepoli granted delay: Italian cyclist Leonardo Piepoli was given more time to prepare for a hearing into his positive doping tests at the Tour de France.

Piepoli twice tested positive for a version of EPO.

SE Missouri State cleans house: Southeast Missouri State fired athletic director Don Kaverman and placed men’s basketball coach Scott Edgar on administrative leave days after the NCAA notified the school of possible major violations.

The moves come three months after the women’s basketball team forfeited 44 victories, and the women’s and men’s programs were placed on two years’ probation for major and secondary violations.
