Aggies beat Nevada in shootout

Chase Holbrook passed for 409 yards and three touchdowns to help New Mexico State win a Western Athletic Conference shootout over Nevada 48-45 on Saturday in Reno, Nev.

Holbrook also rushed for a touchdown for the Aggies (3-2, 1-0), who controlled the ball for the final 3:51 to run out the clock in a game that saw the two teams combine for more than 1,000 yards in total offense.

New Mexico State had 513 yards in total offense, while the Wolf Pack (3-3, 1-1) had 507 yards in a seesaw game that had nine lead changes and three ties.

Nevada’s Vai Taua rushed for 188 yards and scored a career-best four touchdowns. He took in a 16-yard screen pass from Colin Kaepernick from 14 yards to tie the score at 38 with 51 seconds left in the third quarter.

New Mexico State responded with a seven-play, 80-yard drive capped by a 7-yard touchdown pass from Holbrook to Marcus Anderson to go ahead 45-38 with 13:38 left in the game.

After Nevada was forced to punt, Kyle Hughes kicked an 18-yard field goal to put the Aggies up 48-38.

Nevada scored on a 19-yard pass from Kaepernick to Chris Wellington with 3:51 left to pull to within three points, but the Wolf Pack never got the ball back.

(15) Boise State 24, Southern Mississippi 7: Kellen Moore threw three touchdown passes and the Broncos (5-0) rolled to an easy win, beating the Golden Eagles (2-4) with a scoring flurry in the second quarter in Hattiesburg, Miss.

Moore, a redshirt freshman, hit 16 of 20 passes for 144 yards and all three touchdowns in the first half, connecting twice with Austin Pettis, for the efficient Broncos.

The Broncos were so dominant, they hardly handed the ball off to running back Ian Johnson – though he still managed to make plays. He ran 11 times for 56 yards and made big plays that set up three scores.

San Jose State 30, Utah State 7: Kyle Reed passed for 300 yards and three touchdowns and Duke Ihenacho returned an interception 43 yards for another score to power the Spartans (4-2, 2-0) to a victory over the Aggies (1-5, 1-1) in San Jose, Calif.

The Spartans took control with a 21-point second quarter.

Utah State avoided a shutout when Sean Setzer hit Ronald Scott for a 2-yard TD toss with 1:50 left in the game.

The Spartans outgained the Aggies 401-190 in total yards.
