Kimpel, NC boys run away with Richland

Andrew Kimpel of North Central captured the Richland Invitational boys cross country title and four Indians finished in the top six Saturday.

NC ran away with the team title, finishing with 39 points to easily outdistance runner-up Henry Jackson (82). Mead finished third (138) and Lewis and Clark took fifth (247).

Kimpel toured the course in 14 minutes, 57 seconds – 2 seconds ahead of Andrew Gonzales of Southridge. NC’s Jeff Howard (15:04) was third and was followed by teammate Leon Dean (15:15). NC’s Ben Johnston (15:29) was sixth.

In the girls, Seattle Prep coasted to the team title with 87 points and host Richland was second (105). LC was the top-finishing local team at eighth (266).

•Coeur d’Alene sophomore Kinsey Gomez won the girls title by more than a minute at the Bullpup Invitational at Finch Arboretum.

Gomez finished in 19:19. Finishing a distant second was Alicia Doohan of host Gonzaga Prep (20:28).

Allan Schroeder of Mt. Spokane won the boys title, finishing in 16:21. Jeff Pope of Valley Christian took second (16:38).

Mt. Spokane’s boys won with 77 points, four better than G-Prep. Central Valley’s girls won with 64 points, 20 better than Riverside.

Idaho 5A girls soccer

Charlie Evans scored a goal in overtime to lift Post Falls over Lewiston 4-3 in a Region I girls tournament loser-out opener amidst 40 mph wind at Post Falls.

The Trojans (5-11-1) advance to face No. 1 seed Sandpoint (10-3-4) on Tuesday at Sandpoint.

Idaho 3A girls soccer

The Bonners Ferry girls earned a state berth, handling first-year Timberlake 5-1 in the District I-II championship match at Post Falls High School.

The Badgers (10-8-1) got four goals from Briana Watt. Timberlake (9-9-1) can still earn a state berth when the Tigers take on the District III runner-up Saturday.

Football

The Ontario (Ore.) Tigers were too much for Lakeland in a 45-14 non-league game at Rathdrum.

The Tigers led 26-14 at halftime before outscoring the Hawks (1-5) 19-0 in the second half.

Kyle McCrite scored Lakeland’s final touchdown on an 85-yard kickoff return. Orofino outgained Lakeland 492-238.

•C.M. Russell coach Jack Johnson has won his 300th game in 36 seasons at the Great Falls school.

The C.M. Russell special teams blocked a pair of punts that led to third-quarter touchdowns in the 28-14 win over host Bozeman Friday night. Johnson’s record at CMR is 300-89.

The Rustlers (6-1) celebrated at midfield after the game, then in unison chanted, “Three hundred.”

Johnson’s career coaching record is 322-96-1, including two years as a coach in Michigan and one in Wyoming.

Volleyball

Megan Hill had 12 kills to lead visiting Timberlake past Orofino 3-2 in an Intermountain League match.
