Blocked punt in OT beats Dallas

Associated Press

Sean Morey blocked Mat McBriar’s punt and Monty Beisel scooped up the ball and scored from 3 yards to give the Arizona Cardinals a crazy 30-24 overtime victory over the Dallas Cowboys in Glendale, Ariz.

It was the first time in NFL history that a blocked punt for a touchdown ended a game in overtime.

Dallas (4-2) scored 10 points in the final two minutes of regulation, sending the game into overtime when Nick Folk’s 52-yard field goal barely cleared the crossbar as the fourth quarter ended.

Tony Romo, who threw three touchdown passes but fumbled twice, connected with Marion Barber on a 70-yard scoring play that cut it to 24-21 with two minutes left.

Dallas’ defense held, and the Cowboys got the ball at their 32. Romo connected with Patrick Crayton on a 30-yard play to the Arizona 39, where the Dallas quarterback spiked the ball with four seconds to play to stop the clock.

Texans 29, Dolphins 28: Matt Schaub threw interceptions on Houston’s first two possessions, but ran for a 3-yard touchdown with three seconds left, leading the Texans to a 29-28 victory over the Miami at Houston. The Dolphins (2-3) had knocked down consecutive passes in the end zone before Schaub ran for the score.

Vikings 12, Lions 10: A questionable pass interference penalty on Leigh Bodden put Minnesota’s woeful offense in position for a 26-yard field goal by Ryan Longwell with nine seconds to go that lifted the Vikings to a victory at Minneapolis. Detroit (0-5) seemed to outplay the Vikings for the entire game in a spirited effort, but the Vikings (3-4) got a boost from a call by field judge Mike Weir.

Saints 34, Raiders 3: Connecting on 87 percent of his throws, Drew Brees passed for 320 yards and three touchdowns, and the Saints routed Oakland in New Orleans. Reggie Bush scored two of the Saints’ TDs on a 3-yard run and 15-yard pass. Brees’ other scoring passes went for 8 yards to Aaron Stecker and 2 yards to Mark Campbell.

Jets 26, Bengals 14: Thomas Jones ran for two touchdowns, including a 1-yarder late in the game, and caught a pass from Brett Favre for a score as New York beat winless Cincinnati at East Rutherford, N.J. With New York holding a tentative 20-14 lead late in the game, the Jets needed a 10-play, 41-yard drive by Favre that ate up the clock and sealed the victory over the Bengals (0-6).

Colts 31, Ravens 3: Peyton Manning threw two touchdown passes to Marvin Harrison, a third to Reggie Wayne, and the Colt’s sputtering offense finally got itself righted routing Baltimore at Indianapolis. Indy did that even after losing Pro Bowl running back Joseph Addai (hamstring) in the first quarter and third-string running back Mike Hart (knee) in the second quarter.

Buccaneers 27, Panthers 3: Jeff Garcia, starting for the first time since the season opener because Brian Griese is injured, threw for 173 yards and a touchdown at Tampa, Fla. Warrick Dunn had his most productive day running the ball since rejoining the Bucs with 115 yards on 22 carries.

Jaguars 24, Broncos 17: David Garrard completed 25 of 34 passes for 276 yards, one TD and no interceptions, Maurice Jones-Drew rumbled for 125 yards and two TDs on 22 carries, plus the defense had three takeaways in a win over the bumbling Broncos at Denver.

Eagles 40, 49ers 26. Donovan McNabb passed for 280 yards and two touchdowns. The Eagles’ forced three turnovers during a 23-point fourth quarter in Philadelphia’s victory over the 49ers at San Francisco.

Chargers 30, Patriots 10: Philip Rivers threw three touchdown passes and the Chargers’ defense stuffed quarterback Matt Cassel on fourth-and-goal from the 1-yard line to highlight a win over the Patriots in San Diego. It was payback against a team that had beaten the Chargers three straight times, including in the playoffs the past two seasons.
