Johnson wins first PGA Tour title outside Georgia

Zach Johnson won the Texas Open in San Antonio on Sunday for his fourth PGA Tour title, following his third-round 62 with a 64 for a two-stroke victory over Charlie Wi, Mark Wilson and Tim Wilkinson.

Johnson, the 2007 Masters champion who entered the week with only one top-10 finish this year, had a 19-under 261 total on the La Cantera Golf Club’s Resort Course.

The victory was his first outside Georgia. In addition to the Masters, he won the 2004 BellSouth Classic and 2007 AT&T Classic.

Weibring brings it: Down by four strokes with 14 holes to play, D.A. Weibring soared past a fading Nick Price and held off a host of challengers to win the Senior Players Championship in Timonium, Md., his first career major tournament victory in 65 tries.

Weibring closed out a 2-under 68 with a 2-foot par putt on the 72nd hole. He finished at 9-under 271, one stroke better than hometown favorite Fred Funk (66).

Kim earns first title: South Korea’s In-Kyung Kim won the Longs Drugs Challenge for her first LPGA Tour victory, closing with a 1-over 73 in gusty conditions for a three-stroke victory over Angela Stanford on the Blackhawk Country Club course in Danville, Calif. She earned $180,000.

•Schwartzel masters Madrid: South Africa’s Charl Schwartzel won the Madrid Masters for his second European tour victory, closing with a 5-under 66 to best Argentina’s Ricardo Gonzalez by three strokes.

Jankovic continues roll

Top-ranked Jelena Jankovic won her third title in three weeks Sunday, beating Russia’s Vera Zvonareva 6-2, 6-4 in the final of the Kremlin Cup in Moscow.

Igor Kunitsyn won the men’s tournament, upsetting fellow Russian Marat Safin for his first ATP Tour title.

Kunitsyn, who survived seventh-seeded Safin’s 21 aces to win 7-6 (6), 6-7 (4), 6-3, said he had prepared a speech to congratulate his opponent on the victory.

“I was hoping to win a couple of games and that’s it,” Kunitsyn said. “I still don’t understand how I won.”

Jankovic was coming off back-to-back wins at the China Open and the Porsche Grand Prix in Germany. She earned her fourth title of the season and eighth of her career.

•Nalbandian wins in Stockholm: Top-seeded David Nalbandian capped a near perfect week with a 6-2, 5-7, 6-3 win over local favorite Robin Soderling in the Stockholm Open final.

The seventh-ranked Argentine lost just one set in five matches on the Royal Tennis Hall’s hard courts.

Monfils upset: Philipp Petzschner upset Gael Monfils 6-4, 6-4 in the BA Tennis Trophy final in Vienna, Austria, for his first ATP Tour title.

The 125th-ranked German, who had never been beyond the quarterfinals of an ATP event before, had to play two qualifying rounds to reach the main draw and became only the third qualifier this season to win an ATP tournament.

NHL

Oilers open with win

Dustin Penner scored his second goal of the game with 5.4 seconds left and the Oilers beat the Colorado Avalanche 3-2 in the season opener in Edmonton, Alberta. Shawn Horcoff also scored for Edmonton.

Coyotes improve to 2-0: Rookies Kyle Turris and Mikkel Boedker both scored for the first time in the NHL, and Ilya Bryzgalov made 34 saves against his former Anaheim teammates to lead the Phoenix Coyotes to a 4-2 victory that spoiled the Ducks’ home opener.

Auto racing

Pedregon, Connolly get back in NHRA title race

Funny Car driver Cruz Pedregon and Pro Stock pilot Dave Connolly won at the Virginia NHRA Nationals in Dinwiddie, Va., to go from afterthoughts to challengers in the race for the NHRA POWERade Series championships.

The other winner at the fourth of six races in the NHRA Playoff, the Countdown to 1, was Top Fuel ace Tony Schumacher. He has 14 victories this season.

Pedregon climbed all the way from sixth to third place, and closed within 69 points of Wilkerson after entering the weekend 115 points out of first.

Connolly moved within 77 points of Cagnazzi Racing teammate Jeg Coughlin and within three of second-place Kurt Johnson.

•Alonso wins second straight: Renault’s Fernando Alonso won the Japanese Formula One Grand Prix in Oyama, Japan, for his second straight victory. Lewis Hamilton’s lead in the drivers’ championship standings was cut to six points with two races remaining.

College football

Hawaii beats La. Tech

Inoke Funaki threw for two touchdowns and ran for another to lead Hawaii to a 24-14 victory over Louisiana Tech on Saturday night in Honolulu.

The defending WAC champions improved to 6-1 over the Bulldogs, including 4-0 at Aloha Stadium.
