WSU women tie No. 5 USC

Washington State and Southern California played to a 0-0 tie in a Pacific-10 Conference women’s soccer match between nationally ranked teams on Sunday in Los Angeles.

The No. 25 Cougars (6-3-4, 0-1-1 Pac-10) withstood a barrage of shots in the first by the fifth-ranked Women of Troy (11-1-1, 1-0-1) and came away with a point in the standings on the road against a top five opponent for the third time in school history.

USC outshot the Cougars 14-1 in the first half and 23-6 overall but WSU goalkeeper Lindsay Parlee made nine saves to preserve the shutout.

•No. 3 Portland came to Spokane and left with a 4-0 victory over Gonzaga in a West Coast Conference opener.

The Pilots (11-1-0, 1-0-0 WCC) outshot the Bulldogs (5-7-2, 0-1-0) 20-6, scoring two goals in each half.

•Visiting Weber State’s Hayley McCoy scored twice and the Wildcats defeated Eastern Washington 2-1 in double overtime to overshadow Lauryn Koelzer’s school scoring record.

Koelzer scored her sixth goal of the season for the Eagles (2-8-3, 0-1-1 Big Sky), matching the record set last season by Cyeeta Mott.

Weber State is 5-6-2, 2-0-0.

•Idaho (1-12-2) and Louisiana Tech (10-2-3) played to a scoreless tie in the Western Athletic Conference opener at Moscow.

Liz Boyden got the shutout for the Vandals, making eight saves.

•Emily Rohde scored with just under nine minutes remaining to lift Whitworth to a 3-2 win over George Fox in a Northwest Conference match at Newberg, Ore.

Rohde scored off a corner kick by Lindsey Oakes to give the Pirates (8-3-1, 4-3-1 NWC) a sweep of their weekend trip to Oregon.

After a scoreless first half, Kelly Baker and Jenny Krzymowski scored for the Pirates prior to Rohde’s game-winner.

George Fox is 8-4, 4-4.

Men’s soccer

Whitworth moved back into first place in the Northwest Conference by winning 3-1 at George Fox.

The win for Whitworth (5-2 NWC, 15 points), paired with Whitman’s 1-1 tie at Pacific, allowed the Pirates to move past Whitman (4-1-2, 14 points) and Pacific Lutheran (4-2-1, 13 points).

Caleb Barnhill, Cameron Bushey and Elly Bulega scored for the Pirates, who outshot George Fox (2-8-3, 1-4-2) 24-11.

•Wilkie Johnson’s header 1:56 into overtime gave Loyola Marymount a 2-1 victory over Gonzaga at Los Angeles.

Johnson’s goal helped the Lions (4-3-4, 2-1-0 WCC) maintain their recent mastery over the Bulldogs (5-6-1, 2-3-0). LMU has won eight of the past 11 meetings, although the Bulldogs still lead 11-9-1.

Spokane Marathon

Sean Meissner won the Spokane Marathon with a time of 2 hours, 42 minutes, 30 seconds, well ahead of Jake Wilson (2:55:23), who edged third-place finisher Jesse Carnes (2:57:44).

Tami Christensen won the women’s event in 3:28:07. Angela Lefler was second in 3:29:40 and Emily Cox third in 3:31:00.

Junior hockey

Visiting Grand Forks defeated the Spokane Braves 3-2 as Joel Geddes scored the game-winner with 2:19 remaining in the third period.

Connor Olstad and Nick Redding scored for the Braves.
