Suit against God lacked address

A judge has thrown out a Nebraska legislator’s lawsuit against God, saying the Almighty wasn’t properly served due to his unlisted home address.

State Sen. Ernie Chambers filed the lawsuit last year seeking a permanent injunction against God. He said God has made terroristic threats against the senator and his constituents in Omaha, inspired fear and caused “widespread death, destruction and terrorization of millions upon millions of the Earth’s inhabitants.”

Chambers has said he filed the lawsuit to make the point that everyone should have access to the courts regardless of whether they are rich or poor.

On Tuesday, Douglas County District Court Judge Marlon Polk ruled that under state law a plaintiff must have access to the defendant for a lawsuit to move forward.

Chambers thinks he’s found a hole in the judge’s ruling.

“The court itself acknowledges the existence of God,” Chambers said Wednesday. “A consequence of that acknowledgment is a recognition of God’s omniscience.”

Therefore, Chambers said, “Since God knows everything, God has notice of this lawsuit.”

Chambers has 30 days to decide whether to appeal. He said he hasn’t decided yet.

Chambers, who has served a record 38 years in the Nebraska Legislature, is not returning next year because of term limits.

Nancy Reagan hospitalized

Nancy Reagan suffered a broken pelvis in a fall at her home and will be hospitalized for several days, her spokeswoman said Wednesday.

The 87-year-old former first lady fell last week, spokeswoman Joanne Drake said. She did not seek immediate medical care but decided Monday to get checked out because of persistent pain, Drake said.

Doctors at Ronald Reagan UCLA Medical Center determined she had a fractured pelvis and sacrum, the triangular bone at the base of the spinal column.

“She’s in some pain but in very good spirits,” Drake said.

Mrs. Reagan was undergoing physical therapy but surgery won’t be required, Drake said. She will be hospitalized “for a few days – until doctors are satisfied with her progress – and then return home,” Drake said in a statement.

Recovery is expected within six to eight weeks, she said.

Mrs. Reagan apparently got up in middle of the night and fell after twisting on her leg at her home in Bel-Air.

GOP pulls Obama items from site

The official Web site of the Sacramento County Republican Party compared Democratic presidential nominee Barack Obama to terrorist leader Osama bin Laden and urged people to “Waterboard Barack Obama.”

Images promoting the comparison have been removed from the site. The Sacramento Bee reported that the Web site showed Obama in a turban next to bin Laden, the al-Qaida leader, and said: “The difference between Osama and Obama is just a little B.S.”

County Republican Chairman Craig McGlashan did not immediately respond to a telephone message left at his law office by the Associated Press on Wednesday.

A spokesman for the state Republican Party, Hector Barajas, said the party asked Sacramento GOP officials on Tuesday to remove the material.
