Americans top Chiefs in shootout

KENNEWICK – Johnny Lazo scored the lone goal in a shootout and the Tri-City Americans rallied to post a 3-2 victory over the Spokane Chiefs in Western Hockey League play Saturday.

The second-place Americans (8-3-0-0) pulled within three points of the front-running Chiefs (8-1-0-3) in the U.S. Division.

Spokane fell to 0-3 in shootouts this season but scored at least a point for the 11th straight game since a season-opening loss.

Dustin Donaghy staked the Chiefs to a 1-0 lead at the 3:29 mark of the first period when he stole the puck and scored unassisted on a wrist shot.

Jason Reese pulled the Ams even a little more than 3 minutes later, but Mitch Wahl found the net at 12:04 of the first to give the Chiefs a 2-1 lead.

Taylor Procyshen pulled the Americans even again with 1:01 left in the second period.

Spokane goalie Dustin Tokarski stopped 46 shots in the game. The Ams’ Chad Pickard had 39 saves.
