Indians add to season honors

The Northwest League baseball champion Spokane Indians added to their accolades last week when they were awarded the NWL’s Larry MacPhail Promotional Award and the John H. Johnson President’s Trophy.

The Indians, under senior vice president Otto Klein’s guidance, won the MacPhail award for the 14th time in 16 years. The honor is based on community relations, off-season marketing/promotions, game-day promotions, on-field activities, advertising, printed materials and public relations.

The Johnson trophy goes to the team that exemplifies the complete baseball franchise. Contribution to the baseball industry, community presence, and advertising and public relations excellence are criteria for the honor.

The Indians also won the league’s field of the year award for the 10th time in 12 seasons.

Spokane finished 51-25 during the regular season and won its third NWL championship in six years.

Awards

Moscow track coach Dean Walker and Clarkston’s boys tennis team won awards Wednesday at the second Warrior Athletic Association High School Awards Dinner at Lewis-Clark State College in Lewiston.

Walker led the Bears to their first boys track title in 60 years when they won the Idaho State 4A championship last spring in Boise. Walker also was named the Idaho State Coaches Association’s Coach of the Year.

The Bantams captured their second Washington State 2A boys tennis championship last spring. The Bantams went 12-0 in dual matches and won the Great Northern League and District 7 titles.
