Turnesa still tops leaderboard in Las Vegas

Marc Turnesa topped the leaderboard for the third straight day in the Justin Timberlake Shriners Hospitals for Children Open in Las Vegas, shooting a 3-under-par 69 Saturday to take a one-stroke lead over three players.

The PGA Tour rookie had a 21-under 195 total at TPC Summerlin.

Chris DiMarco (63), Michael Allen (64) and Ken Duke (67) were tied for second.

•Langer shoots 5 under: Bernhard Langer shot a 5-under 67 and was tied for the lead after the second round of the Administaff Small Business Classic at The Woodlands, Texas.

•Four share Kapalua lead: Morgan Pressel moved into position for her first LPGA Tour victory of the year, shooting a 5-under 67 on for a share of the third-round lead in the Kapalua LPGA Classic in Kapalua, Hawaii.

The 20-year-old Pressel was tied with Brittany Lang (71), Carin Koch (68), Jee Young Lee (70) at 5-under 211.

Wendy Ward of Edwall, Wash., shot a 73 and is tied for 25th place. Tracy Hanson of Rathdrum shot a 78 and is tied at 53rd.

Williams rallies to win

Venus Williams rallied from a set down to beat second-seeded Ana Ivanovic 4-6, 6-3, 6-4 in the Zurich Open semifinals in Zurich, Switzerland.

Williams will face Flavia Pennetta in today’s final, after the Italian beat Spain’s Anabel Medina Garrigues 6-3, 7-6 (6).

•Nadal will end No. 1: Rafael Nadal will end the year ranked No. 1 after he and Roger Federer both lost in the semifinals of the Madrid Masters in Madrid, Spain.

Andy Murray and Gilles Simon will meet in the final. Simon upset Nadal 3-6, 7-5, 7-6 (6), and the fourth-ranked Murray beat Federer 3-6, 6-3, 7-5 to prevent what would have been the fifth Nadal-Federer final this season.

Hockey

Hossa goal leads Wings

Marian Hossa’s first goal with the Red Wings, scored 23 seconds into overtime, gave the defending Stanley Cup champions a 5-4 comeback win over the New York Rangers in Detroit.

Mikael Samuelsson had a goal and two assists for Detroit, and Johan Franzen, Tomas Holmstrom and Jiri Hudler scored the other Red Wings goals.

•Wild stay undefeated: Antti Miettinen scored the lone goal in a shootout in the undefeated Minnesota Wild’s 1-0 victory over the Tampa Bay Lightning in Tampa, Fla.

Hopkins dominates Pavlik

Bernard Hopkins used lightning quick combinations and a cagey, near-perfect defense to embarrass and confuse Kelly Pavlik in a 12-round non-title bout at Boardwalk Hall in Atlantic City, N.J.

Hopkins received winning scores of 119-106 from judge Alan Rubenstein, 117-109 from Barbara Perez and 118-108 from Steve Weisfeld.

•Former Illini star dies: Nick Weatherspoon, a former University of Illinois basketball star who played seven seasons in the NBA, died Friday in his hometown of Canton, Ohio. He was 58.

•Morrison out in Charlotte loss: Joe Johnson scored 22 points as the Atlanta Hawks held off the Bobcats 102-96 in Charlotte, N.C., keeping coach Larry Brown winless in his newest job. The Bobcats played without former Gonzaga star Adam Morrison, who developed tendinitis in his surgically repaired left knee over the past couple of days and struggled in the morning shootaround.

•Brewers search could take weeks: Milwaukee Brewers general manager Doug Melvin said there are about five candidates on his list as he searches for a new manager. He said on a conference call that the search could take weeks.

•Yankees pitcher arrested: New York Yankees pitcher Joba Chamberlain has been arrested for allegedly driving under the influence, speeding and having an open container of alcohol in his vehicle. Deborah Collins, a spokeswoman for the Nebraska State Patrol, said Chamberlain was stopped for speeding on U.S. 77 near his hometown of Lincoln, Neb., at about 1 a.m.

•Contador will ride with Astana: Cyclist Alberto Contador confirmed he will ride for Astana in 2009 after the Spaniard’s future was put in doubt when Lance Armstrong joined the Kazahk team.

•Benson wins at Martinsville: Johnny Benson passed Ron Hornaday Jr. with 46 laps to go and won the NASCAR Craftsman Truck Series race at Martinsville Speedway in Martinsville, Va.

•Hamilton secures pole: Championship leader Lewis Hamilton of McLaren secured pole position for the Chinese Formula One Grand Prix in Shanghai, China, earning a prime opportunity to secure the title before the last race in Brazil.
