‘Incredible Hulk’ not as strong as other comic movies

From staff and wire reports

“The Outer Limits: The Original Series Complete Box Set”

•••1/2

One of the enduring television images dating from the 1960s is the one offered by the anthology series “The Outer Limits.” It features your set’s picture going fuzzy and a voice intoning the following: “There is nothing wrong with your television set. Do not attempt to adjust the picture. We are controlling transmission.” That voice belonged to voiceover artist/actor Vic Perrin, whose calm baritone contrasted with the essential creepiness of the overall series. The 49 episodes compiled in this collection features work by such familiar actors as Robert Duvall, Robert Culp, Ivan Dixon, Martin Landau, David McCallum, Peter Mark Richman and Leonard Nimoy. Seven-disc DVD collection includes episodes from all three seasons. (seven discs; not rated)

“The Flight of the Red Balloon”

This update of Albert Lamorisse’s 1966 Oscar-winning short, directed by Chinese filmmaker Hou Hsiao-Hsien, tells the tale of a young boy followed through the streets of Paris by a red balloon. “The luscious red orb in ‘Flight of the Red Balloon’ is as much a reminder of the precariousness of life as an emblem of innocence.” DVD boasts no extras. (1:55; not rated)

– Manohla Dargis, New York Times

“To the Limit”

This documentary follows Thomas and Alexander Huber as they set out to break the record in speed climbing at the wall of all walls, the 1,000 foot vertical “Nose” of El Capitan in Yosemite Valley, California. “Director Pepe Danquart and his cinematographers give us lots of splendid mountainscapes, but more importantly, they put the cameras right there with the climbers; we see, up close, every strained muscle and grimace.” DVD includes epilogue, character and crew biographies, production notes. (1:35; not rated)

– Walter V. Addiego, San Francisco Chronicle

“Vice”

Michael Madsen stars as a tormented cop whose team starts to die one by one after they discover a huge haul of heroin. “You’ve see this movie before, but you haven’t seen it filtered through Madsen.” DVD includes making-of featurette, music video. (1:38; rated R for violence, pervasive language, strong sexual content and some graphic nudity)

– Bob Baker, Los Angeles Times
