Coeur d’Alene boys lose in consolation

Bonners Ferry finished third with a 3-1 victory over Sugar-Salem in the boys State 3A soccer tournament in Vallivue on Saturday.

Miguel Mendez had two goals and assisted on the other to Andre Zarate to complete a 14-5-3 season.

The Badgers trailed in the first half before Mendez scored from 20 yards out on a pass from Zarate. Mendez put BF up with a penalty kick at the 63-minute mark and sent a long ball to Zarate near match’s end, who converted in front of the goal. Payette beat American Falls 5-1 for the title.

Idaho State 5A: Coeur d’Alene lost 2-1 to Idaho Falls in the consolation match at Eagle, finishing the season at 10-10 overall. Robby Astin’s penalty kick in the game’s final minute produced the Vikings’ score. Boise beat Mountain View 4-1 for the title.

Girls soccer

Idaho State 5A: Sandpoint defeated Mountain View 2-1 in Meridian to finish 14-4-4 and win the consolation portion of the tournament. Brittany Oakley and Alicia Mertz scored goals for the Bulldogs. Timberline beat Capital 2-1 for the championship.

Idaho State 4A: Moscow (6-9-5) lost 2-1 in overtime to Columbia and finished fourth at the tourney in Caldwell. Bishop Kelly, which beat Moscow in the semifinals, won the championship 3-2 over Skyview.

Idaho State 3A: Bonners Ferry lost in the match for third and fourth, 3-1 to Payette at Vallivue. Allison Dudis scored for the Badgers (11-9-1). Sam Schmitz had 17 saves. Fruitland beat Shelley 3-0 for the title.

Cross country

5A/4A regionals: Coeur d’Alene and Lake City divided 1-2 finishes and Moscow and Sandpoint finished first and second twice during the regional meets in Sandpoint.

CdA’s boys won 27-45 over LC’s Timberwolves, despite a 1-2 finish by LC’s Cody Helbling (16 minutes, 18 seconds) and Dan Scott in 16:13. CdA had five of the next six finishers to claim the team victory. Both teams and the top 10 individuals advance to state next week in Boise.

Lake City’s girls won 27-36 over CdA with three Timberwolves – Molly Mithcell, Rhianna Grossman and Jaida Bowens – finishing behind the runaway winner, CdA sophomore Kinsey Gomez. Gomez timed 17:44 on the 5,000-meter course to win by nearly a minute.

Moscow’s girls edged Sandpoint 30-33 and the Bears boys won 23-45 in the 4A varsity races. Sandpoint senior Megan Bartlett won in 19:18 as the Bulldogs had three of the top four finishers. Moscow placed its five scorers between second and ninth places.

Moscow also had three of the top four finishers in the boys race. Sophomore Adam Storey won in 17:07. But the Bears also had depth as their other scorers placed sixth and ninth for the easy win.

Both teams and top seven individuals advance to state, also in Boise.

Volleyball

The fields are set for next weekend’s eight-team Idaho state volleyball tournaments at various locales in Idaho Falls. (See schedule in Stat Sheet, C9).

Idaho 5A: Lewiston (17-14) defeated Borah in a play-in game and will join Coeur d’Alene (27-3) at Hillcrest High.

Idaho 4A: Host Sandpoint defeated Lakeland in three games and Moscow in four during the Region I tournament to qualify and will play week at Skyline High in the Idaho Falls. Sandpoint won 25-12, 25-21, 25-11, then 25-16, 20-25, 25-11, 25-16. Sandpoint’s Piper Wahlin had 23 kills, Abby Helander 41 digs and Koko James 32 assists on the day. The Bears had eliminated Lakeland earlier. Moscow’s Bridget Lowe had 22 kill and 29 digs in two matches.

Idaho 3A: Top-seeded St. Maries (21-6) swept through the six-team district tournament hosted by Kellogg and Priest River (18-8) to claim the Region I berths to next week’s tourney at Bonneville High. Priest River beat Bonners Ferry 25-15, 25-20, 25-20. Melissa Hopkins had 12 kills, Chelsea Linton 28 assists and Jamie Koch 19 blocks for PR.

Idaho 1A: Unbeaten Lakeside (13-0) will play in the Division I state tourney in Kimberly.

Northeast A League: Jessica Coots had 20 kills and Jeni Beardslee 20 assists in Kettle Falls’ 12-25, 25-16, 25-22, 25-16 victory over Newport to secure the third seed into the district tournament. Newport next hosts Chewelah at 7 p.m. Tuesday in a loser-out match for fourth seed. The winner advances against NEA champion Lakeside and KF plays second-place Freeman Saturday at West Valley.

Football

Southeast 1B: Taylor Gregg ran for three touchdowns and passed for another as visiting Touchet (6-2, 2-1) beat St. John-Endicott (0-8, 0-4).
