HALLOWEEN TREATS

Once again, our young readers didn’t disappoint as they flooded our mailbox with Halloween coloring contest entries.

Our volunteer panel of judges evaluated the entries on theme, composition, use of medium and overall creativity. Honesty was a factor, too – entries that had obvious intervention from mom and dad were disqualified. Competition was fierce, and we understand that different judges may have chosen different winners.

Creative explosions of color are the norm in the 4-and-under category. Summer Ferster’s watercolor and Danikah Johnson’s purple-and-green marker composition stood out for their unconventional color choices. Sarah Bach’s entry employed a unique combination of red, orange and green.

In the 5-7 category, we begin to see more cohesive themes. Dylan Carruth’s entry was one of many simple interpretations, but judges liked the expressiveness of the figure. Ben Mitchell’s Tempera painting combined a dark background with a lighthearted mood. And Kylee Barthuly’s pipecleaner glasses and Muppet-like feather hairdo caught the judges’ eyes.

In the 8-12 group, execution becomes a factor. Claire Bullis’ intricate drawing of candy treats was well-done and made interesting use of the space. Russell Rubertt made a balanced and animated composition with construction paper. Elizabeth Mahan’s pirate-pumpkin brought a smile to the face of everyone who saw it.

The nine winners will each receive a gift certificate to Mobius Kids.

All of the entries will be on display at Mobius, located in the lower level of River Park Square, through the end of the week.

Thanks to everyone who entered, and Happy Halloween!
