Pirates get past Loggers

No. 20 Whitworth took a potentially big step toward repeating as Northwest Conference men’s soccer champion, beating Puget Sound 3-2 in Tacoma on Sunday.

Cameron Bushley, Dion Coxe and Eddy Prugh scored for the Pirates (12-2-2-, 8-2-1 NWC), while Ameer Mohit and Taylor Hyde scored for the Loggers (8-6-2, 6-3-2).

There were 26 fouls called and three yellow cards in the physical game.

Whitworth plays Whitman on Saturday in a game that will likely determine the conference champion.

•Freshman forward Brent Richard scored twice for Washington as the Huskies and San Diego State played to a 2-2 double overtime draw in Seattle.

The Huskies (8-5-2, 3-2-2 Pac-10), who remained in second place in the conference standings, and Aztecs (3-8-3, 1-3-3) have gone to overtime in six of their past eight meetings.

Women

Lori Conrad scored her first goal of the season to give visiting Gonzaga a 1-0 win over the University of San Francisco. Goalkeeper Lauren Ames recorded her sixth shutout of the season and eighth in her career for the Bulldogs (7-9-2, 2-3-0 West Coast Conference). The Dons dropped to 5-11-2, 0-5-0.

Gonzaga completes its home schedule Friday against San Diego.

•Oregon State broke a 21-match conference winless streak with a 3-2 win over No. 21 Washington State in Corvallis, Ore.

Ali Fenter and Carly Dobratz scored for the Cougars (8-5-4, 2-3-1 Pac-10). The Beavers improved to 6-7-2, 1-3-1.

•Brittany Sparks’ goal in the third minute was the game winner as Eastern Washington beat Northern Colorado 1-0 in Cheney.

It was the first conference win of the year for the Eagles (3-11-3, 1-4-1 Big Sky). The Bears (7-12-0, 2-4-0) were eliminated from qualifying for the four-team Big Sky Championship.

•Puget Sound scored twice in the first half to beat Division III 16th-ranked Whitworth in Tacoma.

The loss ended a five-game winning streak for the Pirates (11-4-1, 7-4-1 NWC). The Loggers (14-1-0, 12-0-0) clinched at least a tie for the conference championship.

•A corner kick in the 70th minute led to the game’s only goal as Fresno State beat Idaho 1-0 in Fresno, Calif.

The Vandals dropped to 1-14-2, 0-4-1 WAC, while the Bulldogs improved to 8-8-2, 4-1-1.

•Jenna Robison had the game-winning goal and an assist as Washington beat Oregon 2-1 in Eugene, Ore. The win was the third in a row for the Huskies (12-5-0, 3-3-0 Pac-10). The Ducks slipped to 7-7-2, 0-4-1.
