SCOPE honors volunteers, employees

The Sheriff’s Community Oriented Policing Effort Appreciation banquet was held Tuesday at Northern Quest Casino, to honor Spokane’s exceptional volunteers, citizens and sheriff’s employees who help keep the Spokane area safe.

The banquet was an opportunity for SCOPE members to be recognized for their service and dedication to the community.

Don Dewar, Susan MacRae, Virgil Murray, Jeffrey Gallagher, Charles Griep Jr. and Daryl Langford were recognized for their willingness to act in an emergency despite the potential for personal injury, and were awarded the sheriff’s Outstanding Citizen Award.

Denise Gaffney was also awarded the sheriff’s Outstanding Citizen Award for her commitment to community safety and her willingness to act in an emergency situation.

For their immediate actions and disregard for their personal safety, resulting in saving a life, Deputy Daryl Smith was awarded the sheriff’s Life Saving Medal, and Medic Steven Riley was given the sheriff’s Outstanding Citizen Award.

Deputies Robert Satake and Marc Melville were awarded the sheriff’s Life Saving Award for their immediate action, disregard for their own personal safety, and remarkable actions that resulted in saving a human life.

Sgt. Pete Bunch and Deputies Brandon Armstrong, Tom Edelbrock, Matt Gould, Tim Greenfield, Shannon McCrillis, Jeff Mitchell, Fred Morford, Ron Mulvey, Michael Northway, Al Rollins, Jack Rosenthal, Mark Smoldt, Chad Speziale, Matt Spink, Jennifer Sutter and George Yingst of the Downtown Precinct, First Platoon, were awarded the Unit Merit Citation for their commitment to community safety and service to the Spokane County Sheriff’s Office.

Volunteers from each SCOPE station were awarded the Most Valuable Volunteer of the Year. The volunteers received recognition from SCOPE director Rick Scott.

The 2008 Most Valuable Volunteers include: Mark Fralich, of Central Valley; Darrell Patrick, of SCOPE East; Barbara Enright, of Espanola/Medical Lake; Nancy Hopkins, of Deer Park; Karen Gallion, of Edgecliff; Terry Munro, of Eastern Washington University/Cheney; Ron Gaede, of Fairchild; Theresa Fisher, of Fairfield; Michelle LeVar, of Mounted Patrol; Clifford Cook, of Liberty Lake; Barbara Rorrer, of Newman Lake; Diana Hanna, of Nine Mile; Marilyn Miller, of SCOPE North; Walt Clouse, of Spring Hill; Esther Faulkner, of Trentwood; Dick Ott, of University; and Jennifer Glenn, of West Valley.
