Whits win soccer classic

Whitworth University forward Elly Bulega scored two goals and assisted on another to guide the Pirates to a 4-0 win over Gustavus Adolphus College in the Northern Capital Management Classic men’s soccer tournament on Sunday morning at Whitworth.

The win gave Whitworth the championship in the event, while Cal State East Bay edged Pacific Lutheran University 1-0 in the final game of the tournament on Sunday afternoon.

In the first regular season meeting between the Pirates (2-0) and Gusties (1-1), Bulega helped Whitworth break open a close game in the second half.

Brian Sherpe made four saves for his first career victory for the Pirates.

Whitworth and Gustavus had split a pair of previous meetings (both in the NCAA Division III tournament).

Women’s soccer

Freshman goalkeeper Stephanie Phillips made five saves in the second half and overtime in her collegiate debut as Washington State played William & Mary to a 0-0 deadlock at the JMU-Comfort Inn Invitational at Harrisonburg, Va.

Phillips replaced sophomore Lindsay Parlee at halftime. Parlee made a pair of saves in the first half to help Washington State (1-0-2) record its second shutout in three matches.

The Cougars travel to Knoxville, Tenn., where they will play Illinois on Friday and West Virginia on Sunday at the First Tennessee Lady Vol Classic.

Washington 2, Gonzaga 1: The visiting Huskies (2-0-0) picked up the winning goal in the 80th minute to hand the Bulldogs their second loss of the season.

Redshirt freshman Katie Spangenberg gave Gonzaga a 1-0 lead at the 38:15 mark with her first career goal but the Huskies scored twice in the second half to win.

Gonzaga plays at home Sunday against Cal State Bakersfield.

Texas State 2, Eastern Washington 0: The Eagles fell to 0-2-1 as the Miner Classic in El Paso, Texas., concluded.

The Eagles outshot TSU 6-2 in the first half and were outshot 6-4 after the break, although the team was hampered by a second yellow card (automatic red card) issued to Lillian Bourret in the 64th minute.

Texas State scored both its goals in the second half.

Eastern plays its home opener Friday at 4 p.m. against Cal State Bakersfield.

Walla Walla 2, North Idaho 1: Justine Bowman’s goal in the 39th minute drew the Cardinals even but Shayna Jones answered for Walla Walla four minutes later as NIC took its first loss of the season after three wins.

Volleyball

Whitworth University defeated New York University 25-17, 26-28, 25-22, 25-16 in its fourth and final game of the tournament to finish 4-0 and claim the championship at the NYU Labor Day Invitational.

Pirates freshman outside hitter Kaimi Rocha was named the tournament’s most valuable player after recording 46 kills (hitting .337), 27 digs and seven service aces in the four matches. Whitworth senior middle blocker Holly Tomlin was also named to the all-tournament team.
