Giants repeat not expected

A lot of people don’t like the Giants’ chances of repeating after the retirement of seven-time Pro Bowl defensive end Michael Strahan; the season-ending knee injury to fellow Pro Bowl DE Osi Umenyiora; and the trade of former Pro Bowl tight end Jeremy Shockey to New Orleans.

Their current odds of repeating are 25-1, according to John Avello, director of sports operations at Wynn Las Vegas.

Husain Abdullah finally fell asleep around 5:30 the morning after the Minnesota Vikings’ preseason finale at Dallas and was awake two hours later. He was too nervous to sleep.

A long shot to make the team, Abdullah did enough to put himself on the bubble of making the 53-man roster as an undrafted rookie safety from Washington State.

“It was nerve-wracking because you don’t know,” he said. “All you can do is hope that you did a good enough job that they want to keep you.”

He was able to exhale later that afternoon when he found out he made the team. The Vikings like his coverage skills, instincts and ability to play special teams.

Quarterback Kyle Boller was placed on injured reserve by the Baltimore Ravens. Joe Flacco will start Sunday against the Cincinnati Bengals. … Carolina backup quarterback Matt Moore is out indefinitely with a broken left fibula. … Jacksonville receiver Reggie Williams missed practice because of a hamstring injury and might not be ready for the season opener.
