Golf tourney helps Guilds’ School

The 17th annual Wendy’s Classic Golf Tournament Sept. 15 at the Spokane Country Club, 2010 W. Waikiki Road, will benefit the Spokane Guilds’ School and Neuromuscular Center.

The two-person, best ball 18-hole competition begins with a shotgun start at 1 p.m. The cost is $250 and includes lunch, dinner, prizes and an auction.

Lumberjacks will show skills at fair

The Spokane County Interstate Fair will feature the International Lumberjack Show Friday through Sept. 14.

The show will include performers competing in ax throwing, log rolling, spring board, two-man cross cut, the new pole climb event, and more.

Performances will be daily on the South Lawn at the Spokane County Fair and Expo Center.

The Super Science Company will display “Fun with Physics” in the Ag A building Friday through Sept. 14. The exhibit is interactive science fun and education for all ages. It includes mind bogglers, simple machines and Newton’s Laws.

Tuesday is Senior Day at the Fair. Seniors 65 and older will receive free admission. There will be games and activities for seniors in the conference center in the west end of Bay 1 from from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m.

Shelter marks 15th anniversary

Transitional Living Center, 3128 N. Hemlock St., will celebrate 15 years of service to homeless women and children on Saturday. The open house will be held from 3:30 to 5:30 p.m.

The event will include tours of the building, live music, food provided by Transitions’ The New Leaf Bakery and Cafe and children’s activities, including a bouncey castle. The community garden project Growing Hope will be available for viewing.

The center’s 16-unit building houses women and their children for up to two years. Services provide parenting classes, life-skills classes and child care for women returning to work or school.

Strong Road from Five Mile Road, east to Maple Street, will be closed to traffic through Sept. 17, because of water line and sewer work by contractors.

Motorists will be detoured to Maple Street, onto Johansen Road, to Five Mile Road.

St. George’s presents ’Godspell’

Students at St. George’s School, 2929 W. Waikiki Road, will perform the musical “Godspell” on Wednesday and Sept. 12 and 13 at 7 p.m. in the Founders Theater at the school.

An exhibit of school-owned prints by 20th century artists such as Pablo Picasso, Marcel Duchamp, and Joan Miro will be on display in the school’s art gallery. The opening reception for the exhibit will be at 6:30 p.m. on Wednesday. The exhibit will run through Oct. 10.

Tickets for “Godspell” are $5 for general admission and $3 for students and persons 65 and over. Tickets can be purchased in advance in the Upper School office or at the door.
