Public works director resigns

CHENEY – Don MacDonald, the public works director for the city of Cheney, has resigned his position after 14 years in the department. The city received his letter of resignation Aug. 28.

“He is looking to lend his expertise to another entity down the road,” said Arlene Fisher, the city administrator.

MacDonald has been instrumental in securing more than $25 million in grants and low-interest loans for water, wastewater and transportation infrastructure and development, according to a press release from the mayor’s office. He also has helped obtain financing for the Cheney Downtown Revitalization Project, the Simpson Parkway Drive project, the Cheney residential street and sidewalk program and the Cheney Research and Business Park, the press release said.

MacDonald also directed the transportation, water, wastewater solid waste and parks maintenance program and managed the public works staff of 21 employees.

Fisher said that the city will advertise for a new public works director and Mayor Allan Gainer has appointed Todd Ableman as the interim public works director.

The City Council is expected to formally accept MacDonald’s letter of resignation at its regular meeting Tuesday.
