Peace celebrations

 Several events are scheduled in Spokane and Coeur d’Alene from Thursday through Sept. 21 in conjunction with the United Nations’ 11 Days of Global Unity.

Spokane events, including prayer vigils, plays, holistic fairs, a Baha’i drumming circle, workshops and inspirational movies, are presented by One Peace, Many Paths, an interfaith alliance of 13 community groups. For a full schedule, see www.onepeacemanypaths.org.

 In Coeur d’Alene, local organizations including the Human Rights Education Institute, Peace Coeur d’Alene, Daikonia and others are hosting various “Peace Makers” activities. More information is available at www.peacecoeurdalene.org.

Healing Rooms

 Healing Rooms Ministries will present its 10th annual Spiritual Hunger Conference starting Wednesday at the Spokane Convention Center, Group Health Exhibit Halls, 334 W. Spokane Falls Blvd.

Featured speakers include Bishop Joseph Garlingtoncq of Covenant Church in Pittsburgh, Bill Johnson of Bethel Church in Redding, Calif., and Cal Pierce of Healing Rooms Ministries.

Orthodox talks

 The Rev. A. James Bernstein, pastor of St. Paul Orthodox Church in Brier, Wash., will discuss “From Orthodoxy to Orthodoxy: A Jewish Christian Journey” on Wednesday from 7 to 9 p.m. at the Coeur d’Alene Inn, 506 W. Appleway Ave.; and “The Jewish Roots of Christian Worship” on Thursday from 7 to 9 p.m. at St. John the Baptist Orthodox Church, 4718 E. Horsehaven, Post Falls. Piano concerts

John Nilsen, a pianist from Portland, will perform today at 4 p.m. at Rockford United Methodist Church, 217 S. First, Rockford, and at 7 p.m. at Rosalia United Methodist Church, 214 S. Whitman, Rosalia, Wash.; and Sunday at 2:30 p.m. at Highland Park United Methodist Church, 611 S. Garfield St., and 4:30 p.m. at Fowler United Methodist Church, 3928 N. Christian Writers’ Conference

 The fourth annual American Christian Writers’ Conference is Friday and next Saturday at the Mirabeau Park Hotel, 1100 N. Sullivan Road.

There will be workshops and sessions hosted by authors and agents, as well as consultations and writing classes

Special services

 St. Paul’s United Methodist Church, 1620 N. Monroe St., will present a special back-to-school blessing Sunday during the 10:30 a.m. worship service.

 The Veradale United Church of Christ will host a celebration of its faith community with a special service at 10:30 a.m. Sunday, followed by a fellowship meal. Those attending are asked to bring salad, dessert or bread to share to go with spaghetti. The church is at 611 N. Progress Road.

Food events

  The Immaculate Heart Retreat Center, 6910 S. Ben Burr Road, will present a brunch for the Nativity of Our Blessed Mother on Sunday from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. The brunch includes champagne, a carving station with beef and ham, waffles, salads, pastas and birthday cake to celebrate the feast day of the Virgin Mary.  The Spokane Buddhist Temple, 927 S. Perry St., will present a pancake breakfast Sunday from 9 to 11 a.m. The breakfast will include eggs and sausage. Cost is $5. For more information, call (509) 534-7954.

  The Philoptochos of Holy Trinity Greek Orthodox Church, 1703 N. Washington St., will present an all-you-can-eat taco bar Sunday after the 10 a.m. liturgy. Cost is $10 for adults, $5 for children younger than 12 (free for college students with ID). Proceeds will benefit Orthodox Christian Fellowship, a college campus ministry. Sale events

Windfall, a thrift shop at 1024 S Perry St., will hold a bag sale today from 11:30 a.m. to 6 p.m. All you can stuff in the provided shopping bag will cost $5. Proceeds from Windfall benefit programs of the Service League of St. John’s Cathedral.

AIDS CareTeams

 A volunteer orientation and training for those interested in becoming members of multifaith AIDS Care Teams will be Sept. 20 from 9:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. at Unity Church, 2900 S. Bernard. Rally Day

 Sunday is Rally Day at Spokane Valley United Methodist Church, 115 N. Raymond Road. Services begin at 9 and 11 a.m. and Sunday school classes will begin at 9 a.m. There will be a potluck lunch at 12:30. Those with last names beginning with the letters A-M are asked to bring a salad; letters N-Z are asked to bring a dessert. The church will provide meat and beverages.

Grandparents’ Day

 Sunday is the Sunday school kickoff at the Episcopal Church of the Resurrection, 15319 E. Eighth Ave., and also the Grandparents’ Day barbecue.

Worship services begin at 8 and 10 a.m. A book sale will be held throughout the morning and the barbecue will follow the late service. The church will provide hamburgers and hot dogs. Those attending are asked to bring a salad or dessert to share.

Anniversary celebration

Zion Lutheran Church, 8304 E. Buckeye Ave., will celebrate its 60th anniversary Sunday.

There will be a cake reception following the 8:30 a.m. service. The Sunday school at 9:45 a.m. will include games, crafts, music and a bounce house. After the 10:45 service there will be a barbecue picnic, with several former pastors expected to attend.

Those attending are asked to bring a salad or dessert to share. The church will provide the meat and beverages.
