Zags, Hoosiers first to play

The first basketball games in the new Lucas Oil Stadium in Indianapolis will be a Dec. 6 doubleheader featuring Gonzaga and Notre Dame.

Organizers said Friday that Gonzaga will play Indiana in the first game of the Hartford Hall of Fame Showcase, followed by a Notre Dame-Ohio State matchup.

This will be the third year of the showcase, an annual fund-raiser for the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame in Springfield, Mass. Both games of the doubleheader will be televised by ESPNU.

The retractable-roof stadium is home to the Indianapolis Colts and has been selected to host the 2010 NCAA Final Four and the 2012 Super Bowl. The basketball configuration for the showcase will accommodate about 40,000 fans.

Husky mascot listed as ‘out’

It’s been a rough start for the University of Washington.

First, the Huskies lose their season opener to hated rival Oregon, and now their mascot is out with an injury.

The university’s Web site reported that the Huskies’ canine mascot, Spirit, has been placed on the disabled list and will be unable to attend today’s home game against Brigham Young University at Husky Stadium after suffering a recent shoulder injury.

It is unclear how long the Alaskan Malamute will be unable to perform his duties as Washington’s live mascot.

Since last spring, Spirit has been scheduled to retire as Washington’s mascot upon the conclusion of the current football season.

Storm pushes race to Sunday

NASCAR postponed the Chevy Rock and Roll 400 until Sunday at 10 a.m. PDT because Tropical Storm Hanna is expected to hit Virginia this afternoon.

Nationwide and Cup qualifying were rained out, putting Joey Logano on the pole for the Nationwide Series’ Emerson Radio 250 and out of the Cup race.

Logano was supposed to make his Cup debut at this weekend’s races in Richmond.

Kyle Busch will start from the Cup pole.
