Penn St. roughs up Beavers
Another week of off-field drama couldn’t slow down No. 19 Penn State.
The Nittany Lions (2-0) shoved aside the distraction created by the suspension of two defensive starters, then rolled over Oregon State, 45-14 on Saturday at State College, Pa.
Evan Royster rushed for 141 yards and three touchdowns, Daryll Clark threw two TD passes and the Nittany Lions’ defense didn’t miss a beat when it counted.
The Beavers (0-2) had a few highlights, including Jacquizz Rodgers’ 12-yard scoring run late in the second quarter, when the freshman broke three tackles up the middle and tumbled into the end zone.
Rodgers added a fourth-quarter TD run and finished with 99 yards on 22 carries.
(15) Arizona State 41, Stanford 17: At Tempe, Ariz., Rudy Carpenter threw for 345 yards and three touchdowns to lead the Sun Devils (2-0) to a victory over the Cardinal (1-1).
Carpenter completed 27 of 36 passes and threw an interception.
Carpenter has thrown for a school-record 733 yards in the first two games.
(18) Oregon 66, Utah State 24: At Eugene, Ore., Justin Roper returned from a concussion and helped the Ducks (2-0) to a school-record 688 yards in a rout of the Aggies (0-2).
LaGarrette Blout ran for 132 yards and two touchdowns for Oregon.
The Ducks’ yardage surpassed the 667 they gained against Brigham Young in 1989.
