Riddick rolls during Virginia half marathon

Ralph Riddick of Spokane was an age-group division winner in the Rock ‘n’ Roll Half Marathon last weekend in Virginia Beach, Va.

Riddick, 76, was one of the survivors on a hot day in which nearly 4,000 of the 20,000 starters dropped by the wayside.

He won the men’s 75-79-year-old age division, covering the course in a time of 2 hours, 40 minutes, 26 seconds.

Bill Fitzner, 42, of Mead finished second in the men’s 40-44-year-old division at the San Francisco Marathon in early August, clocking 2:51.52.

Fitzner placed 23rd overall among the men.

In a companion half marathon, Mary Ann Boskey, 67, of Spokane, was ninth in the women’s 60-69 division, timing 2:32:58.

Bowling

Leading qualifiers Mike Federico and Tim Tristoe defeated Brandon Roush and Ryon Connor 418-383 to win the Junior Bowlers Tour alumni tournament late last month at Valley Bowl.

Lacey Kerr and Jim Brinkman finished third, Chris Gray and James McCold were fourth and Adam Holtman and Cory Porter were fifth.

Daniel Seifert led the boys scoring and shared the day’s top honor with men’s leader Brinkman, both rolling 265s.

Kayla Yend led the girls with a 217.

Becky Dudley’s 202 led the women.

The next JBT will be next Sunday at Players & Spectators.

Track and field

George Mathews of Hayden Lake won four gold medals in the men’s 65-69 age division in the North, Central American & Caribbean World Masters Track and Field Championships last weekend in Clermont, Fla.

Mathews won the shot put in 42 feet, 11 inches, the hammer in 163-5 and the weight throw in 60-33/4. He also compiled a world-leading score of 4,747 points in the weight pentathlon (hammer, shot, discus, javelin and weight throw) for his fourth gold medal.
