Cougars sweep Montana State, Northwestern

Two WSU players named all-tournament

Saturday couldn’t have gone much better for the Washington State volleyball team.

The Cougars (6-4) started the day with a sweep of Montana State at their Cougar Challenge tournament and finished with another sweep – over Northwestern – in Pullman.

WSU finished with a 2-1 record at the tournament. Wichita State, which beat the Cougars on Friday, finished 3-0.

Two Cougars were named to the all-tournament team, setter Renee Bordelon and libero Kelly Hyder.

Hyder finished with 18 digs against Northwestern while Bordelon tallied 31 assists and two aces against Montana State.

•Gonzaga also finished with a 2-1 record at its Bulldog tournament, defeating San Diego State in four games before falling in four games to Weber State.

Two Bulldogs (4-6) made the all-tournament team, including senior Elaina Renius, who finished with 46 kills in the tournament.

Gonzaga freshman setter Denise Van de Mortel also made the team. She had 52 assists in the Bulldogs match against San Diego State.

•Eastern Washington fell short against 12th-ranked Oregon and UNLV on the final day of the Oregon Classic in Eugene.

Setter Ashley Hamilton had 46 assists on the day as the Eagles (3-6) lost in three sets to both teams.

•Led by Kaimi Rocha’s 15 kills, Whitworth defeated Chapman in three sets at the Cal-Lu-Fornia Classic in Thousand Oaks, Calif.

The Pirates (7-5) were swept by Cal State East Bay in their second match of the day

•Haley Larson’s 17 kills led Idaho’s attack as the Vandals (6-3) swept UC Riverside at the Portland State Showcase.

•Shadle Park product Brynn DeLong had 12 kills as CC Spokane defeated Green River in four games at the College of Southern Idaho tournament in Twin Falls.

The Sasquatch later beat Meramec (St. Louis) in four games.

Men’s soccer

Adam Zakrzewski and Nick Reilly scored and Josh Peck stopped seven shots as CC Spokane (2-4-1) scored a 2-1 victory over Clark CC (1-4-1) at Spokane Falls Community College in NWAACC play.

Women’s soccer

Natalie Nichols (Lakeland High) netted two goals and Justine Bowman (Central Valley) also scored during a 3-1 victory over Warner Pacific in Portland. North Idaho improved to 5-3.

•Keeper Allison Seymour saved four Chemeketa shots in CC Spokane’s 0-0 tie with the Storm (3-2-1) in an NWAACC contest at SFCC. The Sasquatch are 2-4-1 on the season.

Junior hockey

Tanner Slarks and Chase Wharton scored in the first period and Shane Horlacher netted the winning goal in the third period as the Spokane Braves (1-1) won their Kootenay International Junior Hockey League home opener 3-2 against the Beaver Valley Nitehawks (1-1) at Eagles Ice-A-Rena.

Spokane hosts Grand Forks at 2 p.m. today.
