No. 15 Arizona State falls in overtime

Associated Press

Malo Taumua blocked a field goal to lift UNLV to a 23-20 overtime upset of No. 15 Arizona State on Saturday night in Tempe, Ariz.

Taumua’s block on a 35-yard field-goal attempt by Thomas Weber came after Kyle Watson kicked a 20-yard field goal on the Rebels’ overtime possession.

The loss took the luster off Arizona State’s game against No. 2 Georgia next week.

For the Rebels (2-1), it will go down as one of the great victories in the school’s sometimes checkered football history.

UNLV tied it at 20 with 18 seconds left on Omar Clayton’s 8-yard touchdown pass to Phillip Payne, who made a leaping one-handed grab.

The spectacular play capped a 10-play, 74-yard drive that lasted 2:45, with Clayton 6 of 8 passes for 70 yards.

Rudy Carpenter finished 13 of 23 for 242 yards and two touchdowns and was intercepted once for the Sun Devils (2-1).

(16) Oregon 32, Purdue 26 (2OT): At West Lafayette, Ind., LaGarrette Blount ran 3 yards for a touchdown in the second overtime to give the Ducks (3-0) a come-from-behind win over the Boilermakers (1-1).

Oregon trailed 20-3 early in the second quarter but tied the game late in the third. Purdue’s Chris Summers missed a 44-yard field goal as time expired in regulation.

(18) BYU 59, UCLA 0: At Provo, Utah, Max Hall tied a school record with seven touchdown passes and the Cougars handed the Bruins (1-1) their worst loss in nearly 80 years.

The Cougars extended the nation’s longest winning streak to 13 and improved to 3-0 for the first time in seven seasons. They grabbed control with four touchdowns in the first 5:18 of the second quarter.

Maryland 35, (23) California 27: At College Park, Md., the Terrapins (2-1) scored touchdowns on their first three possessions en route to an upset of the Golden Bears (2-1).

California didn’t reach the end zone until the closing minutes, and by then it was far too late.

New Mexico 36, Arizona 28: At Albuquerque, N.M., Rodney Ferguson ran for 158 yards and two touchdowns and freshman James Aho tied a school record with five field goals to help the Lobos (1-2) beat the Wildcats (2-1).

Ferguson also tossed a 25-yard trick play scoring pass to quarterback Donovan Porterie.

Oregon State 45, Hawaii 7: At Corvallis, Ore., Jacquizz Rodgers ran for 110 yards and two touchdowns and the Beavers (1-2) defeated the Warriors (1-2).
